My takeaway from the election results yesterday is that parties and leaders who don’t do things differently are doomed. Parties whether in power or in opposition need to change their campaign/governance style and mechanisms according to the changing public mood. Change is the only constant.

ALL NINE COPS TO BE HANGED!!! In a landmark judgement, the honourable First Additional District and Sessions Judge of Madurai, G Muthukumaran pronounced death penalty for all nine policemen in the Jeyaraj and Beniks custodial torture and death case. Inspector S Sridhar, sub-inspectors P Ragu Ganesh & K Balakrishnan, head constables S Murugan and A Samidurai and constables M Muthuraja, S Veil Muthu, S Chelladurai & X Thomas Francis have all been found guilty of the double murder. On 19th June 2020, Jeyaraj went to his son’s mobile shop in at Sathankulam in Thoothukudi. Police arrested him for violating Covid rules. Following the father’s arrest, Beniks went to the police station and requested for his father’s release. Beniks apparently had an argument with the cops. They arrested him also and tortured him and his father through the night and later sent to judicial remand. Beniks died at Kovilapatti Government Hospital on 22nd June, 2020, and Jeyaraj passed away the next day. The investigation later revealed that the mobile shop wasn’t open beyond the permissible hours. Basically a false case was slapped. Later, a female constable, Revathi came forward to tell the truth of their torture. Not only were the son & the father beaten brutally throughout the night but were also made to clean up their blood off the police station floor and walls with their clothes. Beniks sustained 13 external injuries and Jeyaraj had 17 wounds that ultimately led to their deaths. They were bleeding from their rectums when they were sent to jail!!! Following a huge social media uproar and protests, there was pressure on the then Tamil Nadu government to conduct a fair investigation into their deaths. If you go through the whole case, you will realise that 59 year old Jeyraj and 31 year old Beniks were killed purely because the ego of the policemen was hurt. They were angry that Beniks questioned why his father was arrested and being beaten up. Family of the victims hope this will be a lesson to all policemen who think they can get away with any crime. But unfortunately in our country most police don’t play by the rules. It is either their ego or orders from above or corruption that drives them. Hoping for better policing and a system that stands for victims, especially the voiceless ones.

Punjabi is a god gifted language. It uplifts the depressed, turns up the party, makes you fall in love, and grieve lost love, all in one breath. Very few languages hold this diverse emotional range.

Bhai Moti Ram Mehra. Bhai Moti Ram Mehra was a humble sevadar whose love for the Chhote Sahibzade burned brighter than his fear of death. When Baba Zorawar Singh, Baba Fateh Singh and Mata Gujri Ji were imprisoned in the freezing Thanda Burj at Sirhind, he could not bear to see them suffer without food or warmth. Under cover of night, he carried warm milk in his hands and heart, quietly entering the tower so the young Sahibzade and their grandmother might find a moment’s comfort in that bitter cold. He knew discovery meant certain death for himself and his family, yet he chose sewa over safety and compassion over fear. For this act of devotion, Bhai Moti Ram Mehra and his entire family were martyred, their sacrifice remembered as “the world’s most expensive milk.”

What the salad tried to do to us. The first ambition of any plant is to make itself uneatable. Long before anything clever walked on earth, plants settled on poisoning anything with a mouth. If you can’t run, you better taste terrible. The only way to stay alive was to face your predator (dinosaur, beetle, goat, man) with chemistry. Plants got clever in the only way available to them. They made toxins, astringents, enzymes, fibrous defences. Which made them and their parts bitter. Also indigestible, and outright poisonous. In evolutionary terms, it was a cunning move. Not that the plant knows anything about cunning. But the natural consequence was deterrence. You bite, you suffer. You learn. You stop biting. Humans responded in the human way. By using fire and other things. We boiled, we burned, we soaked, we crushed, we fermented. We pickled. We found ways to take the bitter poisonous offerings of plants to our hungers. We hacked our own biochem, made over 50 types of CYP450 enzymes. They’re fascinating. A plant toxin molecule (alkaloid, glucosinolate, cyanogenic glycoside, saponin etc) is like a greasy stain. CYP450s act like detergent: They grab it, break it apart, make it dissolve in water, and wash it away. Cats don’t have a lot of this stuff. The thiosulfates in a couple of cloves of garlic can trigger a dangerous oxidative crisis in cat blood. About four cloves (of garlic) can be a potentially lethal dose. A tiny amount of solanine from a raw potato can sicken and kill a rabbit. Without a particular kind of P450, a potato would be your last meal. We figured out how to eat the enemy. And then we got kinky about it. Our tongues learned to relish the sting. And the rot. We started liking the burn and the bitterness. We started having poison for the plot. Hot sauce. Tannins. Coffee so strong it peels paint. Flavour is a toxin we’ve come to applaud. Plants spent a hundred million years trying to kill us. We’ve spent a hundred million years learning to savour their attempts. That’s the story, give or take a few famines and a few million deaths.

Delhi media had informative and engaging chitchat with @AjitPawarSpeaks . Maharashtrian neta responded to all questions at winter lunch organised by @praful_patel. His main thrust was on the new government in Maharashtra. Ajit Dada claims, ‘ @AmitShah fully understands our position and importance of what we bring to the table.’ He added, ‘sarkar number se nahi chalti.’ Ajit dada’s personality has undergone transformation. Lots of new insight he shared of Maharashtra’s politics. @SunilTatkare to @nishuarora (@NCPspeaks election campaign designer) were present, too. Missed Maharashtrian food. Khana of Ganga belt was served including dal from Muradabad.

Just day before yesterday we- me and Baba Siddique ji were planning to meet yesterday evening to discuss few things. But fate had other tragic plans- which have shocked me, numbed me. All I can say is that when someone goes away the way he did, we are left with marvelling at the quality of their life. You have gone too soon, but you lived a life full of dreams & love! Farewell!
