Gavin Newsom's office is spending $19 million in taxpayer dollars on a nine-month California Brand Campaign to hype the state as an economic powerhouse and fight negative narratives. About $14 million goes to ads, the rest to a New York PR firm like Edelman. It runs through the end of his term. California does have huge GDP — tech and AI drive that. But the state also leads in unemployment (around 5.6%, highest or near-highest nationally), has seen basically zero net job growth since the pandemic, faces a multi-billion-dollar deficit, and has the country's worst homelessness crisis. People and businesses are leaving in droves. So the tweet touts one strong stat while glossing over the rest. Spending taxpayer money to polish the image right now? That's drawing plenty of side-eye, especially with the budget squeeze.

Senate Republicans delivered the biggest raise for working families in a generation. We eliminated taxes on tips and overtime, lowered taxes on Social Security, and cut taxes for Americans in every county.  Democrats voted NO on every single one of these pro-worker provisions.

Under Pritzker (since 2019), Illinois state tax collections have risen ~$18 billion annually (51% increase, far outpacing inflation), with **per-resident state taxes up ~$1,434** (or ~44% from ~$2,790 to $4,030 per person in recent data). The **combined state + local tax burden** is now the **highest in the U.S.**: average Illinois family pays ~$13,099/year in 2025 (~16.5% of household income), 52% above the national average. This includes dozens of fee/tax hikes (gas doubled + inflation, tobacco, betting, telecom, etc.), record property taxes (#1 nationally), and overall spending growth of ~40%. No broad middle-class income tax rate hike, but effective burden rose sharply via these and local factors. Exact household impact varies.

All these cuts to hurt famers and rural communities, and Darren Bailey is nowhere to be found. Illinois deserves a governor who stands up for them—not one who rolls over for Donald Trump.
