Is the Underdog Effect a myth? 🤔
This is a closer look at the data used by the authors of the original hypothesis, Gibbs et al, 2012.. 🏒🇨🇦📅

@NickFriend1 @glurcher Yet, none of the players in the article mentioned this.
English

@NoThirdMan @glurcher Yeah, they do an enormous amount, particularly in a holistic sense actually

Being released from the county game is tough. The months afterwards - working out who you are and what comes next, losing your identity, accepting your fate - are often tougher.
A piece following some of the players currently navigating those challenges:

@NickFriend1 @glurcher Does the PCA do enough to help players transition out of pro cricket? Should the system encourage players hollistically to have an identity beyond just being a (disposable) cricketer?
English

@GeorgeDobell1 6 of the 7 players are independently educated. I wonder if to get to the overall % of 52% indy amongst all male professional players, a higher % join as Rookies and then leave the game at a higher rate than state schooled players?
English

This is good:

Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th.
I am often asked why we do well in these rankings.
I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice.
The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature.
There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

@denverrefugee @MatthewAndrew23 @JSportsSci @AdamKelly07 @matthewreeves @JamesDugdale @AlexMcAuley2 If they havent been deselected. Selected late developers probably have just enough counter balancing factors to stay in the system.

What are the perceptions of youth academy football coaches in the UK of ‘playing‑up’?
Grateful to play a small part in this great study published in the @JSportsSci by @AdamKelly07, Achuthan Shanmugaratnam, Liam Davies, @matthewReeves, @JamesDugdale, and @AlexMcAuley2.

@Final_Word_Pod @collinsadam @GlamCricket @AsaTribe I remember when Rob Yates & then Tom Haines were the next big thing at the top of the order for England. Asa Tribe may well be a successful England player, as the other two may still do, but its probably good practice to always maintain perspective around 'talent id'. 👍

@SomersetCCC Please can I ask which organisation did the designating in this case? Somerset CCC/ECB/Other?
English

@SomersetCCC Please can I also ask, are there other 'designated Centres of Cricketing Excellence' (as mentioned in the linked article) across Somerset, Devon & Cornwall? Many thanks.
English

🤝 We’re thrilled to announce that King’s College, Taunton remains a cornerstone of Somerset Cricket for 2026.
From Jos Buttler and Tom Banton to James Rew and Erin Vukusic, King’s continues to be a world-class production line for Somerset stars 🙌

In cricket is it unlawful to discriminate because of (relative) age indirectly through rules, policies or arrangements?
* from 2022 but the Q is still open.

@mattwang22 Thanks Matt. Cricket also has some (very few) state school success stories too... Canterbury Academy, Aldridge Admy in Brighton. More state school hubs imo should be an area for ECB investment in order to realistically compete with the top indy schools.

Are scholarships cricket's biggest red herring? 🏏🧑🎓💷
Just how many state school kids who benefit from 'free' independent schooling become professionals?
onemoresummer.co.uk/post/are-schol…

English

@dafrankland 10% of a typical 50K/yr fee is still a significant burden and therefore a barrier.
I don't think there are any published figures around skillset or ethnicity on scholarships. It would be useful.
English

@NoThirdMan There's a few things about scholarships.
A lot of them aren't 100%. Parents being able to afford even 10% of a school's bills is rare.
The 100% ones tend to be for players already nailed on for a county contract.
They predominantly seem to go to batters, and White players.

TODAY at Lords, Richard Gould, ECB CEO, will be speaking to Heads of Cricket at (Independent) Schools. Are these schools becoming an (un)official part of the England Pathway? 👇
