So very happy to finally share the work from my master’s! Check it out to see why zoos make excellent biosurveillance sites and to find out what mosquitoes in zoos are feeding on! academic.oup.com/jme/advance-ar…

If you’re curious about what my classmates and I learned and did during our masters, then check out this new article from the @_NEVBD that summarizes everything and addresses gaps in the vector-borne disease workforce! academic.oup.com/jme/advance-ar…

Marisol, a REEU student from @utrgv, presented her work on heartworm surveillance last week and then we celebrated with a lab lunch. It was great having her in the lab this summer!

@KYT_ThatsME Ya I mean there’s not really a reasonable explanation for comments like that other than that. 100% unnecessary and shitty

1. The *minimum* conditions for malaria - competent mosquitoes and warm enough temperatures - are met in the southern U.S. even in the absence of climate change. We didn’t get rid of malaria here until 1949. This event is not inherently attributable to climate change.

Apropos of nothing, we have plenty of Anopheles mosquitoes in this country capable of transmitting Plasmodium and have, like, since forever

Last #LIWC2023 tweet comes w/ 3 requests. 1- The Murillo lab is looking for pests of #poultry sign up here! murillolab.ucr.edu/poultry-survey 2- @caleb_hubb is looking for house flies 3- @katyvsmith is still looking for images of flies &/or ticks from #livestock tiny.utk.edu/CattlePestImag…

My penultimate (great word) #LIWC2023 post. @epp_tn PhD students Rebecca Butler & @katyvsmith gave excellent talks about Asian longhorned ticks & detecting livestock pests. BOTH received travel awards from the group...and lots of questions!
