@shelbyspees Having really inquisitive kids has helped me a ton with this. Every time my youngest asks "what's that mean?" I have to take a deep breath, think about what she already knows, and think up an analogy that will bridge the gap in her knowledge.
@mydailydev@shelbyspees Software engineering is a team effort, which inherently means communication is part of the job description. It may not come naturally to everyone, but *anybody* can learn communication as long as they put in the effort.
@shelbyspees why everyone expect that all devs should be perfect in communicate, soft skills and will explain everything as clearly as possible?
not all people can be teachers, like not everyone can be programmer
if you can't understand, then maybe the problem is somewhere else
@lovelacecoding Have your past 10 jobs all been ~6 months? That's concerning. A few short jobs, especially spread out, are not a big deal. Sometimes an offer comes along with inconvenient timing - most people won't fault you for accepting such an opportunity.
I see posts that romanticize switching jobs every year, or even every 6 months.
So I wonder, would you feel comfortable applying to jobs with a resume that shows that you've worked for every company on there for no more than 6 months?
I would feel very uncomfortable personally.
@ravinwashere Started with messing around in game's config/ini files, progressed to making games by following online tutorials (back before YouTube was filled with them). Eventually got an automate-able job and coded myself out of it. Been doing that ever since.
I taught myself how to code with Youtube and programming blogs.
What was your personal experience like If you are a self-taught software developer like me?

Go check your mail, walk around the outside of your office building, eat lunch on your porch - just get some sunlight every day!
@cbccss In your case, it'd be something like:
1) Cover the screen
2) Ask for proof of age
3) Validate that proof of age
4) Uncover the screen if validation passed
Now you've got something to Google: "hide site content with overlay JavaScript". Take it piece by piece from there 😊
@cbccss Everybody's first instinct is to think of the code first and feel overwhelmed. Instead, think how you'd do it by hand, in non technical terms. Then you can start thinking about how to code each of those much simpler steps.
@NanouuSymeon I slapped a desk on my Pandemic Treadmill™️ and have been walking while coding. I get caught up in a problem and end up walking many hours/miles more than I would otherwise. I got weird looks during meetings at first, but now I think everybody expects it 😅
@tweevtran Professional coding isn't like educational coding. Everything is messy, documentation is limited, other people mess with your code, and you have deadlines/customers/budgets.
In short: be prepared for the differences, and don't be upset when you're SUPER lost early on.
@prthgo I use switches almost exclusively for enums, since that's (generally speaking) the only time it makes sense to have that many conditions chained together.
Friendly reminder: lack of sleep severely impacts your mental abilities and sleep helps organize your thoughts. If you're stuck on a problem, the answer might be rest, not working harder! ninds.nih.gov/health-informa…
@jesslynnrose That sums it up. The best part? The boss was mad because nobody else had vacuumed and exclaimed "I guess I've gotta do everything myself!" right before this happened. 🤦♂️
@jesslynnrose Boss was normally quite mild mannered, so watching the meltdown was kind of amusing until it hit me that I'd have to recover the server's data 😭
@jesslynnrose I had a boss plug a vacuum into the strip the "server" used (small business, server was a normal PC). Power surged, fried the server, and the boss stormed out with the (full sized, mind you) vacuum and chucked it like 10 feet into a trashcan. 😐
@sftwrcraftman@BelloneDavide Yup, that's it. Unless you override Equals(), classes are compared by reference. structs behave more-or-less like primitives and are compared by value. I'm pretty sure things get weird if you have classes as variables in your struct, but don't quote me on that.
No, this won't solve all inequality, but it's really low hanging fruit. And you'd think it'd be an easy sell - who doesn't want more time off?? It's too late for me, but maybe my kids will live in a world where *everybody* gets plenty of time with their family. 🤞4/4
And beyond PTO for a newborn, fathers can (and should!) participate throughout. I go to my kids' school events, I take them to the doctor, I pick them up if they get sick at school. Any decent workplace should be okay with a parent, any parent, taking care of their family. 3/4
