I am very pleased to see this! Donna Gygax did a superb job in shepherding this to completion. This is a proper memorial for Ernie. I am pleased to have been of some small service in helping bring this about as well as some of you who played in my fundraiser game at Dragonlands. You all had a big part in making this possible.

Vince Vaughan placed the winning bid of $5,000 at Gary Con for this Jeff Easley painting. From enworld - Luke Gygax revealed this is the cover to his upcoming collaboration with Wizards of the Coast at Gary Con over the weekend. During an annual auction at the convention, Gygax revealed a painting by Jeff Easley featuring his famed character Melf. According to GamingTrend, which posted the news on Saturday, the painting will be used as a cover for the upcoming Greyhawk compendium being developed by Gygax and Wizards of the Coast, which was unofficially called Melf's Guide to Greyhawk.

From the Luke Gygax Press Event at Gary Con (link to video in the first reply.) Luke says that the new head of D&D apologized to him twice for how his family was treated by WOTC. He got emotional while saying that he can't believe he's going to get to contribute to new official Greyhawk supplements, and that the name "Gygax," "Greyhawk," and "Dungeons & Dragons" will once again be combined in an official capacity, something that he previously thought would never happen again. When asked what he could share about what he is looking forward to bringing to the new Greyhawk products: "I love 5E for expanding the customer base, but this new fangled Dungeons & Dragons is too easy!" Wants to write alternate rules that will make Greyhawk more "Gygaxian." Wants to feature his childhood character Melf the "right way," since he was never happy with how he has been portrayed as both a character and in art. He even hated the original LJN toy, since it was originally a completely different character (Peralay from Quest for the Heartstone), and looks nothing like his own character (Melf doesn't have blond hair.) Wants adventures to be dangerous, not cakewalks, and for characters to not feel like they should be walking around in tights and a cape (superheroes.) Wants the game to incorporate more problem solving. If there is a movie he'd like David Harbour to play his dad and then when someone asked who would play him he joked "the guy who played Reacher, or uh, John Cena, yeah those guys are probably the closest," lol. I do think that Luke is a genuinely kind and good guy, and believes that this is the very best thing he can do to honor his dad's legacy, keep the family name in the ongoing pop culture consciousness, and do justice to the setting he grew up with. And for that I'm happy for him and hope that he is pleased with the results.

A few months before he passed away in 2003, a 74 year old children’s television host sat down in the same studio where he had filmed 895 episodes over 33 years and recorded one last message. It wasn’t for children. It was for the adults who had grown up watching him. Fred Rogers hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on American public television from 1968 to 2001. For over three decades he walked into the same set, changed into a cardigan and sneakers, looked directly into the camera, and spoke to children as if each one of them was the only person in the room. He never raised his voice, never talked down to his audience, and never rushed a single moment. In that final recording, he looked into the camera one last time and said “I’m just so proud of all of you who have grown up with us. And I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are.” He passed away from stomach cancer on February 27, 2003. He was 74.

The passing of Dan Simmons feels like the death of a friend. He was my favorite writer—since Summer of Night in ‘91. He was the last of a genius breed of writer, whose talent matched his literary ambition. We still have his books. But the world is smaller without him. #dansimmons

I want to offer a quick congratulations to my friend Matt Malone, who put his money where his mouth is, as I knew he would. As the attached press release will attest, Matt’s company, @groundworks, just awarded $31 million dollars in dividends to several thousand employees who spend their days in crawlspaces, trenches, and basements, doing a long list of dirty jobs that have saved many thousands of homes across the country from all sorts of calamity. bit.ly/4kLQa2I I took an interest in this company a few years ago, when I learned that Matt had implemented a program that turned all of their workers into owners, giving the frontline workers a chance to participate in whatever success the company might enjoy. I also encouraged Matt to feature his actual employees in a completely unscripted, totally authentic advertising campaign – something no one in his industry has ever dared to do. “What would that look like?” he asked. “A totally unscripted ad campaign?” “Well,” I said, “if we do it right, it’ll look a lot like an episode of Dirty Jobs.” That was three years ago. Since then, Groundworks has doubled in size, and their employees, (who are now owners), have kicked my ass with a level of vigor and enthusiasm that reminded me of the good old days. These guys are not only experts at what they do, they LOVE what they do, and I've enjoyed working alongside all of them. Honestly, I hope more companies follow Groundworks example. It’s funny how so much of the traditional drama between labor and management fades away, when everyone owns a piece of the pie. Congratulations, Ground Works! Keep it dirty!

Update on my dad. He is going fast. Nurse says he has less than a week. He’s at home in the living room in a hospital bed. Soon he’ll be with his parents, brother, and son. He is the best person I’ve ever known and my hope all my life is that one day I can be a tenth the man he is.
