Immature Bald Eagles spend the first four years of their lives in nomadic exploration of vast territories and can fly hundreds of miles per day. Some young birds from Florida have wandered north as far as Michigan, and birds from California have reached Alaska. ~ Cornell

Time for another Casey progress, right? He will be five years old early next year and almost at his full maturation stage. The top 2 photos are from October of last year. The bottom ones from last week. 🧵

So thankful for people who G.A.F. about animal welfare, and for the excellent people at @NorthIWRA who helped to corral this beautiful, but injured #Raven. It’s spicy and has some fight left so it has a good chance of being rehab’d and released. #Nanaimo #VanIsle #WildlifeRescue

A little cool fact: whenever a hawk or eagle appears in a movie onscreen, no matter what species, the shrill cry on the soundtrack is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk. Cool hey?😊

The Red-Tailed Hawk is one of the most widespread and commonly observed birds of prey in North America. It is found in almost any open or semi-open habitat, from sea level to above timberline. It occupies open woodlands, grasslands, agricultural fields, estuaries, and marshes🧵

Our 4 beautiful Red-tailed Hawks fit right in to the beautiful Autumn colours of the season. Glider, Chinook had both been imprinted so are non releasable. Petra and Mango have had injuries that did allow them to be released. NIWRA will remain their forever homes.🧵

We’re starting our random photos day off with the two species of turtles in our ponds. Its hard to tell the difference between the Red-eared Slider & the Western Painted from a distance. Great to see the Western Painted closeup - the only native freshwater pond turtle in BC.

Some colour and sweetness for your newsfeed! This little Anna’s Hummingbird had been in our care and was released into our Wildlife Garden this summer. It sure was enjoying the flowers. Thanks to Dave E for this awesome video & as always, thanks to our Animal Care team.

We all know Ravens love to play and apparently at times they will just taunt and mock other creatures because it’s funny🧐😊 We hope you can come and enjoy time with him and all our beautiful residents soon!

Happy Weekend friends! A few fun photos to share with you from a lovely visit yesterday. Blizzard was quite the character - lots of vocalization, very playful and every time the camera was raised, got this pose! Even his neighbours were noticing! 🧵

This barred owl is one of three that have come in this week. He is on an anti-inflammatory medication to reduce any brain swelling, and we are hoping to see signs of improvement in the coming days, as we have seen with the owls who came in earlier in the week.

With the changing seasons & light conditions, we’re seeing more & more barred owls admitted due to vehicle collisions. While these collisions are almost impossible to avoid, one thing we can do to try to prevent them is ensuring we aren’t leaving any litter near roads🧵

especially when it comes to anything biodegradable. Even something as small as an apple core thrown out of a car window can draw critters to the roads, and these critters then draw in hunting owls.🧵
