I must confess a certain admiration for the carefully curated narrative surrounding Rick Jackson—his poignant tale of familial hardship, the alcoholic mother, the adoption, the foster care odyssey. It’s a touching story, one that Fredrick Douglas and others of similar circumstance never saw fit to weaponize quite so artfully. Truly, Mr. Jackson possesses a compelling backstory, rich in compassion and heartfelt reflection on family and upbringing. Which makes it all the more amusing—and, frankly, grotesque—that this same “sincere” gentleman would personally authorize a campaign of calculated falsehoods: the barrage of mass mailers, the barrage of television commercials, the relentless assault on the Jones family. One can only marvel at the selective morality at play. Apparently, the trauma of Mr. Jackson’s own childhood eclipses everything else, including the welfare of those sweet little Jones children who now find their family name dragged through the mud with lies. After all, why let mere facts or basic decency interfere when there are votes to be harvested? Enough with the performative victimhood.
