Foreign affairs expert Dr Gul-i-Ayesha Bhatti says, “Right now, especially in the last two months, Pakistan has been an indispensable pivot state. I would say that Pakistan is uniquely positioned with its dual-track credibility, and it has been trusted, and is still being trusted, by Tehran and its security operators, while also maintaining an active line of communication with Washington.”

The possible end of the war will inevitably lead to a broader redefinition of regional balances and power relations across the Middle East and beyond.
- Worth noting that part of that process may already be underway. The Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in September 2025 could represent the nucleus of a future regional security architecture, one which (to be noted) includes one nuclear power.
- There have also been rumors in recent months about a possible future extension to Ankara, given its proximity to Islamabad, and perhaps eventually even to other regional actors such as Qatar and others.
- What is particularly interesting is that Tehran appears to be watching this evolving architecture with interest rather than outright hostility.
- If post-war Iran gradually evolves into a more “praetorian” system, with the armed forces and security apparatus playing an even larger political role, in some ways closer to the Pakistani model as argued by many analysts including myself, then one day even some form of “external association” with this emerging regional security framework may no longer be unthinkable, although overcoming decades of mistrust and historical misunderstandings with Riyadh and other Sunni actors would obviously not be easy.
- For now, apart from the KSA-Pakistan pact itself, most of this remains speculative. But the fact these scenarios can now even be discussed says a lot about how fast the region may already be changing beneath the surface.
