The revionist history people do like folks didn't make fun of kids with special needs, didn't make fun of their classmate that struggled to read during class read alouds, and intentionally picked them next just to jeer and laugh when they messed up is abhorrent.

The same person calling me stupid and a failure doesn't know what "tended" in "My teachers *tended* to use books from Black authors" means or implies. Yet, context clues is an integral part of reading, as well as comprehension.

And if people understood context (which is apart of literacy), they'd understand that. Clumsy and awkward are more commonly used in everyday American English. The hyperfocus on that word over silhouette and extraordinary (bigger issues) is faux superiority, imo.

This is the best response I’ve seen on this. Gauche is not commonly used in American vocabulary. I honestly didn’t know what it meant. I looked it up, now I know what it means. People take pride in feeling like they know more than others.

you read books in HS but then, you never re-read them as an adult. your analysis & understanding from when you were 14 shouldn't be the same now but a lot of ppl are clearly stuck in high school that years later, being gifted & talented or advanced is still so important to them.

If they cannot read, throwing a book in front of them and just saying "read it" ain't helping them learn or build that skill. None of us learned how to like that but a bunch of adults keep telling the same kids they say can't read, to simply read more.

Back to the topic at hand, literacy has BEEN in the gutter bc learning how to read is a communal effort. It happens in the classroom AND out. But if one or both of those areas is lacking for whatever reason, kinda hard for students to pick up the necessary skills.
