The swing decisions remain very good, he’s still controlling at-bats well, and defensively he’s been slightly above average at third base. But the slug just hasn’t shown up. The quality of contact metrics explain a lot of it: • ground ball rate up to a career-high 42.2% • launch angle slightly down • weak contact rate up to 7.8% (career average is just 2.8%) Even the strikeout rate has crept up a bit: • 16.8% K rate this year • 13.6% career norm None of those numbers individually are alarming. Together though, they paint the picture of a hitter who just isn’t impacting the baseball the way he typically does. And pitchers absolutely know where they want to attack him right now: • sliders 19.7% of the time • .091 AVG vs sliders • .091 SLG vs sliders What stands out most is the expected numbers aren’t screaming “bad luck” either. This hasn’t really looked like a hitter getting robbed — it’s looked more like a hitter getting beat in a very specific way. The book is definitely out at the moment. Now the question becomes what adjustment Bregman makes next, because throughout his career that’s usually been the thing that separates him from most hitters.
