𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐫. It's been an honour to speak about my research trajectory during this week's Research and Innovation, University of Nottingham RKE Celebration Event. I reflected briefly on my journey as an engaged observer. In 2024 I published "Germany and China: How Entanglement Undermines Freedom, Prosperity and Security" (Bloomsbury). I was delighted that it drew rave reviews in the Financial Times (Kynge 2024), the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Roetz 2024), the Taipei Times (Baron 2024), and the open-access journal SIRIUS – Zeitschrift für Strategische Analysen (Messingschlager 2024), as well as an appreciative book symposium in Asian Perspective. I presented key takeaways at the Paul-Löbe-Haus of the German Bundestag and gave a talk at the US Embassy in Berlin. But I was soon struck by a sobering realisation. The monograph did its work within the expert debate, yet it had little purchase on Germany's actual China policy — which to this day has not sufficiently come to terms with the challenge of an increasingly assertive China under the Chinese Communist Party. Reaching an audience, I learned, is not the same as gaining traction: In 2024 I had the attention of Bundestag parliamentarians and embassy audiences without that attention translating into policy change. Academic books, as my colleague @RoryCormac once told me, are slow burners. Fast forward to now. The reception of my German-language book "Wenn China angreift" (C.H. Beck, 2026) has been remarkable: it spent five weeks on the Spiegel Bestsellerliste and drew positive reviews across the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Rundschau, Capital, Das Parlament, Internationale Politik and elsewhere. I gave more than 20 interviews — with Spiegel, Welt, SWR1, WDR5, Die Presse, n-tv and t-online among others — including an appearance on Markus Lanz, one of Germany's best-known talk shows. And, more importantly, I have been invited to brief senior politicians, diplomats and security analysts in Berlin and Brussels. What I find striking about this turn of events: whereas "Germany and China" established my credentials as a China scholar with a close reading of how autocracies affect democracies, the scenario book "Wenn China angreift" became the key to far wider public and policy engagement. Both are works of non-fiction grounded in evidence — but it was the trade book that struck a chord, allowing domain expertise built up over years to travel from academia into public debate. I am grateful to the University of Nottingham for the intellectual environment that made this journey possible.
