Before the Wheelie Bins Before wheelie bins lined the pavements, there were metal dustbins down the long roads and back alleys. Dented, heavy and often overflowing, with lids that clanged loud enough to wake half the street. And the dustmen? Hard working, chirpy and strong as oxen, hauling those bins onto their shoulders whatever the weather. They knew some of the neighbours, joked as they worked, and somehow managed to take just about anything with them. There was also that distinctive smell of vegetable matter wafting down the street from the back of the lorry, a scent that somehow became part of the rhythm of the morning. The early morning rumble of the lorry, the scrape and grinding of metal, and the sound of another street waking up. They didn't need them putting out. They went into every house to get them.
