Earlier this week, we started the era of #biosolutions and a new beginning as @novonesis. Today, legacy Novozymes announced its last full year announcement, delivering solid results with an organic sales growth of 5% and an EBIT margin of 25.4% before special items for the financial year 2023. CEO Ester Baiget of Novonesis commented on the results: “Legacy Novozymes has leveraged its strengths of a well-diversified portfolio, unique production capabilities and broad market presence to deliver strong growth in a volatile market. Biosolutions hold the key to some of the world’s biggest challenges, and the growth in 2023 confirms our continued trajectory to growth and the demand and strong momentum." Addressing global food challenges and mitigating climate change: How CO₂ could be an unlikely ally in future food production In a new article published by World Economic Forum, our CEO Ester Baiget and CEO Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen from the @novonordiskfond explain how biosolutions can provide the tools to turn CO₂ into nutritious protein. Novozymes and the Novo Nordisk Foundation are part of an international consortium, which is co-funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The consortium aims to use CO₂ to produce proteins for human consumption without using agricultural land. The basic idea is to produce protein via fermentation, a technique that has been used to produce food for millennia. Captured CO₂ can be converted to acetate that is used to feed microbes, which in turn produce protein. That way, we can supply nutritious food to a growing population within the boundaries of our planet while turning CO₂ into a raw material and thus contributing to mitigating climate change. "The solutions are ready. But regulation is not ready." Our CEO Ester Baiget was interviewed live by CNBC from the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, where she discussed solutions and barriers to accelerating climate action. "Biosolutions that are natural and biodegradable are still treated as though they were chemicals, and that creates unnecessary roadblocks, hindering the speed of the green transition. It takes six years in Europe to register a microbe to replace a fertilizer, while it can take two years in the U.S," she said. On the role that biosolutions can play in the green transition: "We are part of the answer of the future. Our biosolutions can transform food systems by replacing fossil-based chemicals, supporting the shift to alternative proteins, and reducing the carbon footprint of food production. In all areas, our solutions are an enabler to the green transition." She also talked about our proposed merger with Chr. Hansen, which is expected to close following regulatory approvals in Q1. In order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, we need to reduce global emissions by around 7% annually until 2030 – but they continue to increase by 1.5% today. We are proud to be one of the founding members of the new Denmark – India Green Fuels Alliance initiative. Led by the Danish Embassy and the Consulate General of Denmark in India, the Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI) aims to strengthen collaborative efforts between the two countries in the sustainable energy solutions sector. In total, nine Danish organizations have committed to the initiative as founding members, including A.P. Moller - Maersk, Topsoe, Umwelt Energy, MASH Makes, European Sustainable Solutions, Danfoss, Brdr. Christensen and Hydrogen Denmark. Meanwhile, the GFAI advisory board members include India Hydrogen Alliance, Energy Consortium at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, the Danish Energy Agency and State of Green Denmark. What is it like working as a graduate for Novozymes? In an interview, our colleague Louise Crone Glaas talks about her experiences as part of our global graduate program. Louise mentions why she decided to apply for the graduate program at Novozymes: "The graduate program at Novozymes stood out to me because it is more tailored to the individual, compared to many of the other programs. Furthermore, I favored the flexibility of the program and that I was able to influence and co-design my program in terms of rotations, length of rotations, and nothing is set in stone if new opportunities arise." Her best advice for students and future graduates: "Take responsibility for your own journey and speak up about your wishes. I have learned at Novozymes that there is no limit to your curiosity whether it is regarding the job, the organization, enzymes or people, and my colleagues are more than willing to share, so my best advice is to ask a lot of questions to make the most of your time as a graduate." The EU Commission is expected to announce further details on the EU Biotech and Biomanufacturing Initiative in February. The Alliance for Biosolutions has listed 10 top priorities to help make biosolutions a driving force of the green transition in Europe, including necessary changes to the regulatory framework. The first priority mentioned is that the EU should recognize biosolutions, biotech and biomanufacturing as a separate industry, differentiated from chemical solutions, and in need of a tailored regulatory and policy framework. 2023 has been a year of amazing achievements. We take a look back on a few highlights of the year. 🙏 • Collaborating with French company @Carbios on technology to transform plastic waste into new high grade recycled PET plastic. • We announced historically strong full-year results with our highest organic sales growth in over a decade. • After serving on the Board since 2020, Cees de Jong became our new Chair of the Board of Directors. • Shareholders of Novozymes and @Chr_Hansen approved the proposed combination with an overwhelming majority of votes. • We launched Novamyl BestBite. This biosolution improves freshness and shelf-life of baked goods, without compromising on the eating experience. • With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we entered a consortium to create a sustainable source of proteins for human food derived from CO2. • With our launch of Lipura® Split, fatty acid producers are able to achieve up to 30% energy savings, 30% water savings, higher degrees of splitting, and increased capacity in the thermal fat splitting process. • We partnered with Bactolife to complete development and launch of a feed additive for weaner pigs with the potential to significantly reduce Post Weaning Diarrhea and antibiotic use. • We launched Vertera® ProBite, a game-changing biosolutions improving texture in plant-based meat. • We welcomed our new CFO Rainer Lehmann who joined Novozymes on November 1. • Finally, we ended the year with the announcement that @novonesis will be the new name for the future combined company of Novozymes and Chr. Joy of Giving 🤍 Over the past weeks, our colleagues have contributed to their local communities as part of our Joy of Giving initiative, creating a positive impact during the holiday season. The initiative is part of our Inspire commitment, allowing our colleagues to use 1% of their work time for activities supporting community needs, helping educate the next generation and enabling our employees to live more sustainably. “Making a difference in the communities we are part of is a fundamental element of our culture and purpose. With initiatives like Joy of Giving, we can help in ways that are meaningful to local communities and make an impact here and now,” Morten Enggaard Rasmussen, EVP of People, Sustainability & Brand, says. Examples from across the world: ✨ In Thailand, colleagues visited the 'Father Ray Foundation' located in Pattaya, Chonburi province, bringing various food supplies to help disadvantaged children and students. ✨ In Türkiye, we hosted 20 children aged 5 to 14 from ‘Nesin Foundation’. The children were taught about biosolutions and food waste reduction while learning how to bake. ✨ In our Berlin office, our colleagues purchased and wrapped Christmas presents for underprivileged children in Eastern Europe - a total of 28 shoeboxes packed with gifts. ✨ In Denmark, our colleagues helped fulfill a special Christmas Wish for 289 children from families in need in collaboration with "Julehjælpen". ✨ Across sites in the U.S., colleagues donated winter coats and volunteered in local kitchens for charity events.
