Migrants being blamed for problems they did not cause isn’t new. When immigration systems appear chaotic and uncontrolled, it becomes easy for politicians to point fingers, stoke fear, and scapegoat the vulnerable to seize power. We see this dynamic playing out in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and beyond. But the headlines often miss that even in this darkness, extraordinary acts of solidarity are happening every day: parents in Washington, D.C. escorting their neighbors’ children to school, British citizens welcoming Ukrainian refugees into their homes, and veterans defending the Afghan interpreters who once fought alongside them.
