SARB Hikes Repo Rate to 7% Amid Rising Inflation Concerns The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has increased the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7%, marking the first interest rate hike since 2023 as inflationary pressures continue to mount. Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago announced the decision today, Thursday following a Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, citing rising global oil prices, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and a weaker rand as key risks to inflation. The latest increase pushes the prime lending rate to 10.5%, placing additional pressure on consumers already struggling with higher living costs and debt repayments. The new rate will take effect on Friday, 29 May 2026. The SARB warned that inflation risks remain tilted to the upside, with concerns that prolonged global instability and fuel price increases could push inflation beyond the bank's preferred target range. The central bank also revised its inflation forecasts higher for 2026 and 2027. Economists say the move is aimed at preventing inflation from becoming entrenched, although it is expected to further strain households, homeowners, and businesses facing rising borrowing costs.
