We have enough housing in Oshawa (which is larger than Barrie BTW) & in the even larger Durham Region. International students will contribute ~$42B to Canada's economy in 2024 (~$45k each). It's a big earner.

While in-between locations in 2019, I was paying $650/month for a room, so not all that different. Plenty of people live in shared houses & have been for decades.

It's easy to blame one group or other for all the problems in the world, but the world is complex & sustainable solutions only come from thinking holistically.

Gravity meant others followed. This visible minority gives politicians an easy target to blame for the failings of successive govts.

@AngelicaOung @fransglobal EU is like the US with immigration, where many in South America want a better life. Here they are primarily from MENA, so a combination of conflict/war/oppression and poverty.

Breaks my heart to admit this because I love immigration. I benefitted from immigration and I would like Taiwan, one of my countries, to relax immigration considerably both for our economic benefit and because it’s the decent thing to do to give our longtime residents a pathway to becoming Taiwanese. But Europe in particular have screwed the pooch. And the first step to the pooch getting unscrewed is admitting they were too lax on immigration. Furthermore, there should be a wider understanding globally that it’s never a good idea to let people in and obtain the rights of citizens without a roadmap to meaningfully assimilate them. Europe’s failure is so extreme that it has been pointed to as a reason why Taiwan must never liberalize immigration. People don’t see the difference in degrees, or even the hypocrisy of loving the freedom of obtaining US, UK and Australian dual citizenship for themselves while still denying longtime residents of Taiwan similar rights.

Canada has always grown due to immigration (at 250-300k/yr since 2000). The 500k numbers recently are short term targets due to the demographic change.
