Earlier in his welcome address, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Lagos State, Prof. Ayobami Salami, described the workshop as coming at a critical moment in Nigeria’s electoral cycle, especially with increasing political activities across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election. He noted that political parties’ membership management, compliance structures, internal discipline, financial accountability and legal capacity would come under greater scrutiny as electoral activities intensify. Prof. Salami observed that unresolved primary election disputes, poor documentation and lack of financial transparency had contributed significantly to litigation and declining public trust in previous electoral cycles. He explained that the Commission’s review of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, which produced the 2026 Regulations and Guidelines, was informed by stakeholder engagement and evidence-based assessments aimed at shifting from reactive interventions to proactive supervision anchored on measurable compliance indicators and improved enforcement mechanisms. Also speaking, the Country Director of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), Adebowale Olorunmola, stressed the importance of strengthening citizens’ confidence in the democratic process, noting that declining voter turnout in Nigeria reflects growing public distrust in electoral institutions and political parties. He urged political parties to improve internal democracy, maintain transparent membership registration systems and make their platforms more inclusive for young people, women and persons with disabilities. According to him, political parties must move beyond transactional politics and embrace reforms that promote accountability, openness and broader public participation.

BREAKING: Political Shockwave as Governor Sim Fubara Reportedly Set to Join NDC After APC Screening Snub Fresh political tension is brewing following reports that Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, may be heading to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after allegedly being left out of a recent APC screening process. The development has sparked intense reactions across social media and political circles, with supporters and critics debating the possible implications ahead of future political alignments in the country. Although there has been no official confirmation from Governor Fubara or the APC leadership at the time of reporting, the speculation has continued to gain momentum online, with many describing the move as a potential political game changer. Analysts believe that if confirmed, the development could reshape alliances within Rivers State politics and trigger fresh debates within the ruling party structure.

Opinion (have your say). ‘What is your opinion on former President Goodluck Jonathan interest to contest the 2027 presidential election?’ Responses should be (80 - 100 words). Some of the responses to this voxpop question will be published in the print version of the newspaper, with the respondents' names and pictures. Thank you.

I am not a member of the APC, so I don’t know what is happening in their screening. Even if they publish the results, why would I comment? I don’t know the reasons they have. What pertains to me is what I will talk about, not what does not concern me. Governor Fubara didn't tell me he has any problem in APC. I’m not a native doctor, neither am I a prophet to know what's happening in the APC. - FCT Minister Nyesom Wike reacts to the Rivers State APC House of Assembly Screening Committee's report, which recommended the disqualification of 65 aspirants loyal to Governor Fubara and Tonye Cole
