NATO doesn’t say that each member state must consult with the alliance before engaging in war anywhere. Common sense says that when a NATO member goes to war, other members don’t give a hand to the other side. Excuse that Europeans can shut down their airspace or bases to America in wars they disagree with means America can reciprocate by choosing which European wars US decides to stand on the side of Europe or on that of its adversaries. BTW, Ukraine is not NATO and US involvement in defending it has been common sense. Not helping out in defense has also been a choice that I disagree with, but that doesn’t amount to giving Russia a hand against Ukraine. NATO’s France, Spain and Islamist Turkey have been active on Islamist Iran’s side. That’s not how military alliances work.

@mketabchi @MartinRpunkt @zaphod77 @Palambill @Mylovanov Ukraine only removed neutrality requirement several months after the invasion of Crimea. Its entry in NATO was denied. Biden sent William Burns to talk to Putin and say that Ukraine would not enter NATO. Putin refused to talk to Burns because invasion was already decided.

Petraeus has short memory. He forgot that Russia is not fighting just Ukraine; it is also fighting the entire West in Ukraine. Given that, it is amazing that they have won the war. There is not much left of Ukraine intact. Zelensky is forcing the Ukrainians to the frontline to keep the war going. Because as soon as the war is over, Zelensky will be history.

The regimes in Iran, Moscow & Beijing have long wanted to fracture the transatlantic alliance. Yes, there are justified frustrations on both sides of the Atlantic. But we must not turn friction into fracture. NATO must strengthen, because our enemies benefit from every crack.

That's it. The US can do antimissile defense with the existing treaties, and Europe has enough air and naval power to control the sea routes.

I think his tactics aren't as effective as they could be, but the European approach is not helpful either. When it's all said and done, real interests will prevail over feelings.

You are losing your allies, you will lose your power projection abilities, and be confined to the American continent.

EU countries cannot be trusted to allow US bases under their jurisdiction to operate in a time of crisis. Greenland is crucial for US defense. Hence, it's crucial that US bases in Greenland will be under US jurisdiction.

The governments of Poland and the Baltic states distrust and dislike the Trump administration even more than the western Europeans because they are directly threatened by Trump’s friendliness towards Putin. The UN vote where the US voted with Russia and N.Korea against Ukraine is copied and framed on the wall of the Estonian foreign ministry

When this is over, the western part of NATO will never be the same. Spain, England, France and Italy have sold us out, as they too often have a history of doing. Eastern European nations are the heart of NATO. They spend money on defense, know how to fight and love the US. France particularly deserves fault and blame. From supporting China and Russia at the UN to denying Americans overflight rights, they’re doing what they’ve always done - showing weakness, while cutting deals with terrorists. (The reason the US has a Marine Corps and Navy is unlike France, we refused to pay a ransom to the Barbary Pirates. France is always happy to cut a deal.) Wars have unintended consequences as nations show their true colors. NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause.
