The Malabar Gold crackdown on X creators, sending legal notices, getting accounts withheld, silencing criticism, many framing it as a "money power" problem. And yes, that's part of it. But there's a deeper structural reason why this keeps happening. Creators have no legislative recognition as a profession in India. Journalists do. They have press accreditation, shield law protections, institutional backing. Celebrities have agencies, contracts, legal teams built around their public role. When they speak, the law has a framework for who they are. When a creator speaks? They're just a citizen. Same Article 19 rights as everyone else, no additional standing, no professional protections, no regulatory body that recognizes what they do as something worth protecting at scale. That's why Vijay Patel's account gets withheld. That's why MeghUpdates gets a legal notice. That's why creators fold or fight alone. At Nyburs, we've been researching exactly this gap. Our paper proposes the Digital Content Entrepreneurship Protection Act, a framework to formally recognize content creation as a profession, giving creators the legal standing that currently only exists for legacy media. We argued that India's "Orange Economy" needs a formal educational pipeline to bridge the gap between "Hobbyist" and "Professional" (Grade II). Today, the Finance Minister announced 15k Creator Labs to do just that. Next step?
