New Yorkers: Tonight's forecast calls for potentially life-threatening flooding, especially for those living in basement apartments and neighborhoods that have flooded before. Heavy rain is expected to begin this afternoon and continue overnight. While not every neighborhood will experience the same conditions, dangerous flash flooding can develop quickly anywhere in the city. If you live in a basement apartment or an area that has flooded before, don't wait to prepare. Sign up for basement apartment alerts at on.nyc.gov/basements and pack a Go Bag with medications, a flashlight, batteries, a portable phone charger, important documents in waterproof bags, and other essentials. Make a plan now for where you'll go if your home begins to flood, whether that's a neighbor's apartment on a higher floor or one of the 51 safe overnight locations we're opening across all five boroughs. Safe overnight locations will open tonight at 8 p.m. and remain available for as long as dangerous conditions persist. Pets and service animals are welcome. Today I honored the life of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, alongside the NYPD, his family, and the Parkchester community. Detective Islam died as he lived: a hero. In the midst of a horrific mass shooting in Midtown exactly one year ago he gave his life in the line of duty. It was an incredible act of courage we must never forget. Didarul Islam will continue to better the lives of others long past his time on this earth. Let us build a City worthy of his legacy. Allah yerhamo.

Heavy rain is returning to New York City this afternoon. Our agencies are out preparing our infrastructure to quickly move stormwater off our streets, but everyone has a part to play in keeping themselves and their communities safe. New Yorkers should prepare now for showers and thunderstorms that will pick up this afternoon and could cause dangerous flash flooding — even a short period of rainfall can quickly flood streets, basements, and low-lying areas. There's a new Sheriff in town. Sheriff Edwin Raymond has dedicated his life to protecting the people of New York while bettering the institutions keeping us safe. He grew up in East Flatbush, the son of Haitian immigrants. He became an NYPD officer to build bridges between the force and the communities they serve, and to write a new legacy for the NYPD. His life's work has been fighting for truth, justice, and safety. I can think of no one better to serve as the Sheriff of the City of New York.

At our five-borough municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, fresh produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.

¡Qué lo que Nueva York! What a privilege it was to be the Padrino of honor at today’s Gran parada Dominicana del Bronx, where thousands of New Yorkers came together to celebrate Dominican heritage.

1 in 8 New Yorkers have Dominican roots, and our city is better for it. From the Soto-shuffle and KAT’s rebounds, to Carlos Cook and Normandia Maldonado — Dominican history and culture help make this city the place it is. — ¡Qué lo que, Nueva York! Fue un privilegio ser padrino de honor de la Gran Parada Dominicana del Bronx, y qué manera de celebrar. Miles de personas en la calle, la bandera por todas partes, el Bronx entero puesto.

36 years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. This came after decades of advocacy from the Disability Rights movement and changed our country and our City for the better. 

More than 1 million New Yorkers live with disabilities. Our City government doesn’t work for anyone if it doesn’t work for everyone.

From accessible bus stops to investments in special education, we’re building a City where every New Yorker can truly thrive.

A 12-year-old was shot and killed in the Bronx earlier today. My heart breaks for his family, friends and all those who loved him. Their loss is unimaginable. I am praying for the speedy recovery of the other two victims of this shooting. I’m grateful for the hospital staff, and the NYPD for their work to find those responsible for this heinous act. Our children should be able to ride their bikes on a nice summer day in their neighborhood without fear of being shot. We cannot accept this violence as normal.

I’ve been briefed on the tragic event that took place earlier today in the Rockaways. Based on the preliminary information available, officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots inside a home. During the response, the armed suspect emerged from the house, refused repeated commands to drop his weapon, and pointed it at responding officers. NYPD officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect, who is now hospitalized and in custody. The NYPD additionally worked to clear neighboring houses and secure the surrounding area to keep nearby New Yorkers safe. Tragically, two women were found deceased inside the home. I am grateful for the NYPD’s swift response and bravery, and am thankful no officers were injured. My heart is with the loved ones of the victims who were killed today. Our administration is in close contact with our law enforcement partners as the investigation continues.

Started this beautiful Saturday talking with students and families at Speaker Heastie’s annual community BBQ in the Bronx — a wonderful tradition that brings New Yorkers together over good food & good music.

What an honor to welcome world champion and Paralympian Brittni Mason across the finish line of the women’s ambulatory 100m final at Icahn Stadium today — and to meet 5x world champion @Melissajanae21 after the race. More than 7,000 New Yorkers entered to win one of 500 free tickets to the @USATF Outdoor & Para National Championships. It was a joy to see so many fans cheering on these incredible athletes at Randalls Island.

I am deeply saddened to learn of a New Yorker's death in City custody following a court appearance in the Bronx. My heart is with his loved ones, who are facing this unimaginable loss. The Department of Correction and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances of this death. Every person in City custody deserves to be treated with dignity and care, and our administration remains committed to ensuring that happens.

This morning, we announced a $43.2 million expansion in the Bureau of Coastal Resiliency — a team of engineers, field inspectors, and city planners ready to protect our city from flooding. As extreme weather and flooding becomes more frequent, we’re making sure New York City has both the infrastructure and the experts needed to protect our communities. We’re not just preparing for the storm of today, but the storm of tomorrow.

Ousmane Diallo was the embodiment of compassion, humility, and a commitment to serving others. I also knew him as a friendly face in Albany, someone whose smile was as dependable as the sun rising.
