Condensate fans and attendees of #apsmarch! Consider sending your abstract (due Oct 25!) to: "Bio-inspired phase-separation" the @ApsDsoft and @ApsDbio focus session I am organizing with @SamWilken_ (session # 02.01.20 or, identically 04.01.39) Thanks!

Another paper from super post-doc @SamWilken_ on DNA nanostars, quantifying the delay for droplet appearance after a quench. The dynamics are consistent with distinct nucleation and spinodal decomposition regimes, and we map the spinodal curve. More here: doi.org/10.1063/5.0204…

Happy to share our just-published review article on liquids (condensates) formed from nucleic acids. We tried to be pretty comprehensive, yet during the publication process ~6 more papers in the area appeared...ah well. see here, hope you like it: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108…

@AlexanderRKlotz While I respect your laziness, in practice it is very easy to organize a session

@mglerner @csantangelo314 @MarkusDeserno Not infinite current. Current impeded by the 100k resistor, or 50k plus internal battery resistance. I think the point of the original problem is initially the time constant is due to series C and 2R, and after switch closes is due to a parallel arrangement

@csantangelo314 @MarkusDeserno @mglerner Yeah I think you are right. After a Long time of being open, V will be 10*2/3 at the top point, not 10. Typo in the label of the potential, otherwise it seems well defined.

@yoheinakajima @littmath Oh also your sim seems to be just a single Alice win, with the numbers being points in that win… likely need to repeat it many times

@yoheinakajima @littmath I think fluctuations in absolute number of wins get very large for large trial number, so it is hard to draw conclusions from one sim…

Flip a fair coin 100 times—it gives a sequence of heads (H) and tails (T). For each HH in the sequence of flips, Alice gets a point; for each HT, Bob does, so e.g. for the sequence THHHT Alice gets 2 points and Bob gets 1 point. Who is most likely to win?

@yoheinakajima @littmath I found similar, elsewhere in thread. I think Bob and Alice are equally likely to win when # flips increases towards infinity...

@littmath In the thermo limit, I think lumpiness disappears-- sequences with long stretches of h's are effective zero probability when flips->infinity, where 'long' means 'a significant fraction of flips' so the simple answer (Bob and Alice equally likely) becomes correct in thermo limit

@littmath I agree with others that Bob winning is due to 'lumpiness' of distributions- many 'hh' pairs are involved in sequences with long stretches of h's (Alice effectively is running up the score in her wins)

@perrys_lab damn! We had made sure to not get scheduled against other condensate sessions, but missed this...should've gotten a dpoly co-sponsor...sorry to miss you!

@OASaleh I’m so sad this session is at the same time as the Dillon Medal symposium in DPoly. 😭

#apsmarch attendees: Check out session K35, “Bio-inspired phase separation”, Tuesday 3-6pm, with great talks on various condensate/compartmentalized systems, including invited talks from Will Jacobs (Princeton) and Sam Wilken (UCSB) @ApsDsoft @ApsDbio march.aps.org/sessions/K35
