The enjoyment of God is the proper happiness of the soul. Man was not made to be finally satisfied with comfort, success, money, praise, pleasure, ministry, or even human love. These things may have their place, but they cannot bear the weight of the soul. Only God can. “You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11). This is why the heart remains restless when it seeks its happiness in created things. The creature was never meant to become the fountain. God alone is the fountain of living waters, yet sinful man keeps digging broken cisterns that can hold no water (Jeremiah 2:13). True happiness is not found when we get everything we want. It is found when God becomes our highest good. “Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth” (Psalm 73:25). That is not religious poetry. That is the soul finally seeing reality. The world can distract the soul, entertain the soul, and numb the soul, but it cannot satisfy the soul. Only the God who made us can fill us. “My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praises with joyful lips” (Psalm 63:5). So the enjoyment of God is not a small part of Christian life. It is the heart of it. To know Him, love Him, worship Him, and be satisfied in Him is the only happiness deep enough for an immortal soul.
