The OCSO is investigating a cryptocurrency fraud case that cost a local resident more than half a million dollars! The victim called us after he said he'd been contacted by someone he believed to be an authorized representative of a prominent, user-friendly cryptocurrency exchange and custodian platform. He installed an app on his computer at the suspect's request, and later found that hundreds of thousands of dollars had been transferred. An investigation by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has led to the arrest of a registered sex offender wanted out of Virginia on multiple extraditable warrants. OCSO deputies initially located a disabled vehicle registered to 26-year old Andrew Bradly Shoemaker near Bob Sikes Bouleavard on March 15th. Further investigation revealed Shoemaker, a registered sex offender, was wanted in Virginia on several charges, including felony threats in writing, grand theft of a firearm, and misdemeanor violations of a protective order. Deputies determined Shoemaker had family in the immediate area and established a perimeter near a residence on David Street. Although he was not located at that address, deputies continued searching and later found Shoemaker walking along Water Street in Fort Walton Beach. Shoemaker was taken into custody without incident. During the arrest, OCSO deputies recovered a stolen firearm tied to the Virginia case from a backpack in his possession. Virginia law enforcement has been notified of Shoemaker’s arrest and extradition proceedings are expected. In addition to the outstanding Virginia warrants, Shoemaker is facing local charges in Okaloosa County including: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, dealing in stolen property, resisting an officer without violence, and failure to register as a sex offender. “This case serves to highlight the diligence of our deputies in identifying and apprehending individuals who pose a risk to the community,” said Sheriff Eric Aden.
