A coworker snapped this pic of a Pileated woodpecker in Douglas County. Pileated woodpeckers need large hollow trees and snags for nest and roost sites. On the other side of Oregon, they're a Conservation Strategy Species in the Blue Mountains Ecoregion.

The first Pacific lamprey passed over Soda Springs Dam since the new fish ladder opened in 2012. It’s likely this is the first lamprey to migrate that high up in the North Umpqua River system in 70 years!

Animals, kelp, and… PLASTIC?! Yep, trash is often found in the Cobble Beach wrack line. 🙁❌ If you see plastic while walking the beach, do you pick it up and throw it away? If you do, thank you! Plastic pollutes the ocean and harms wildlife. #TidepoolTuesday 📸 L. Brandt, BLM

@sheeeeeeeeeed Since we don't have any evidence (camera footage) of how the fisher lost an eye, we can only guess.

@ODFWConserve Do you think the first one is responsible for the second one's eye situation?

Fisher (Pekania pennanti) at DNA trap sites in SW OR. 1) fisher sniffs a site where the night before a rival one-eyed male visited 2) one-eyed male checks out the trap and scratches 3) a fisher scent marks and belly flops in the snow 4) a fisher pair! #mustelid #fisher #Oregon

@SecondNatureMB Genetic research in the early 2000s led to the reclassification of fisher, which were determined to be more closely related to species like wolverine than to the members of the Martes genus. Marten are still classified under Martes.
