The novel was such an important chance for many Ss to see themselves, their families, and their culture in literature. Next, we’ll shift our attention to the Global Goals focused on protecting our environment & the life forms that inhabit it. So much to learn and explore! #vted

In addition to learning about the issues and how the world is working to solve them, Ss wrote letters to Ann sharing their love of the book (they never wanted to stop reading it!) and offering questions, feedback, and their hopes for an eventual movie adaptation! (3/4) #vted

For Ss who were a little unsure about some of the @SDGoals we created a simple overview doc to help guide their thinking. Since we'll be digging in WAY deeper as the year goes on we'll have plenty of time to build our understanding of each goal together later. @bitesizeSDGs #vted

This year in 5/6th Humanities our focus is on the United Nations @SDGoals. We will be exploring the problems they are trying to solve as well as how we can contribute to solutions on a local and global level. This week we started with a few intro activities. @bitesizeSDGs #vted

Finally, after several rounds of conversation, students used their Discover & Discuss Explorer's Journals to write/sketch about what they learned. We were impressed by their ideas and willingness to ask questions! 4/4

After reading @reneewauthor's amazing book "A Place Where Hurricanes Happen" we examined photographs and videos as primary sources of how Katrina impacted the people and city. We also discussed statistics related to displacement and property damage. #vted #ocsuvt 3/4

In 5/6th Humanities we've been spending some time during our Discover & Discuss block examining stereotypes and how they can affect the groups of people who are subjected to them. Specifically, we've been looking at stereotypes related to homelessness. #vted #ocsuvt 1/4

We'll be spending time identifying critical vocab, identifying key ideas, asking ?s, & collecting what we've learned from these excerpts. This will launch us into our discussions about the origins of the concept of race and how it has influenced the development of the U.S. #vted

We're looking forward to using @JReynoldsbooks & @DrIbram's brilliant book Stamped to guide our examination of the perspectives on humanness in the Dec of Ind & Constitution and how they set in motion the racial inequalities that have existed in the U.S. since. #vted #ocsuvt

Next we'll be digging into historical protests in the form of the lead up to the American Revolution & comparing those actions to the protests that are happening across our country today. Are the injustices different? Are the parts involved justified in their discontent? #vted

On Monday, we'll explore each other's thinking and respond with questions and feedback. Hopefully we can gain a better understanding of how and why people protest. #vted #ocsuvt

Our 7/8 OES Humanities Ss are getting prepped to dig in to a challenging unit about injustice and protest. Step one was to examine and categorize images based on the similarities Ss noticed in them. Lots of intriguing results! 1/2 #vted #ocsuvt
