As part of #oesophagealcancer Awareness Month, we had a fantastic morning at Craigavon Area Hospital. Chatting with staff and meeting patients, sharing some of our work. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet so many new faces and to continue to raise awareness throughout NI!

We’re sharing a powerful blog post by David Jones-Stanley who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2021. David reflects that he’d seen awareness months come and go, but looking back, he wonders whether he was truly aware, or just hearing the noise. heartburncanceruk.org/.../awareness-…

We were delighted to visit Cambridge House Grammar School recently. Our Chair, Helen Setterfield gave a talk to the 6th Form and thanked them for their fundraising efforts in memory of their much loved past Principal, Elma Lutton who sadly passed away from oesophageal cancer.

Fewer than 20% of people diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK will survive for more than 5 years. This poor life expectancy is largely due to late diagnosis. One year survival for oesophageal cancer is 89% if diagnosed at stage 1 but drops to 26% if diagnosed at stage 4.

We all know the importance of early diagnosis, but the figures speak for themselves. If you're suffering from ongoing symptoms such as indigestion, heartburn, hiccups, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing food, make an appointment with your GP. #OGCancerAwarenessMonth
