Day 70 - March 11, 2011
Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami strike Japan
A powerful undersea earthquake, magnitude 9.0, struck off the northeast coast of Japan. It triggered a massive tsunami with waves reaching over 10 meters in some areas.
The tsunami flooded towns, destroyed infrastructure, and caused over 15,000 de*ths. It also led to a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after cooling systems failed.
It remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history.
