Abiy's forces have suffered significant losses: at least 256 soldiers killed, 179 wounded, and 122 captured in few battles—among them woreda administrators found in camps. In a sign of systemic collapse, troops are abandoning positions, leaving behind camps, Ural trucks, and Zu-23 anti-aircraft weapons. Abiy Ahmed’s Incoming Ploys (OLF-OLA Press Release) As Abiy Ahmed gauges the posture of his patron in the Middle East war before he starts his own war in the north, he is poised to deploy a series of incendiary cards over the coming weeks and months. The Finfinnee card: he intends to dangle the prospect of incorporating Finfinnee into Oromia, a gambit designed to rekindle Oromo-Amhara hostilities. Mid-level cadres have already been tasked with preparing a document to serve as the basis for a draft proclamation. The election card: by now, the notion of “election” has been reduced to little more than a performance staged for foreign consumption. With over seventy percent of the country beyond the reach of any credible electoral process, Abiy can only orchestrate a hollow ritual within a few urban enclaves. Major independent parties have either already withdrawn from the process or are participating in the capital solely to avoid deregistration—or to expose the charade before exiting. All remaining parties in the process are either created by or colluding with the regime. The Qeerroo card: Abiy is deploying co-opted individuals to hijack the movement’s name and symbolism in an attempt to fracture the Oromo youth. Dressing regime loyalists in the garments of struggle with banners of “silencing the gun among brothers’—while the majority of the Qeerroo remain silenced and unemployed—is an exercise in futility. The religion card: In recent weeks, Abiy’s agents carried out massacres against Orthodox Christians in Arsi; subsequently, his mayor presided over conciliatory talks with Orthodox fathers in the capital. Deepening these sectarian wounds while projecting an air of piety remains very much on the table. The border dispute card:  Abiy will stoke disputes along the borders of Oromia—particularly in Wollega—and across the country. Plans are already underway to inaugurate an "Amhara movement in Wollega" to start the flame. Other fault lines are equally primed: the borders between Oromia and Amhara, Oromia and Somali, and the ones between Amhara and Tigray. Wherever ambiguity exists, he intends to set it ablaze. The “constitutional reform” card: to bait some in the Amhara elite, Abiy plans to promise quick creation of smaller regional states carved from the existing ones—whether through a manipulated constitutional process under Article 47 or the hollow theatre of national dialogue. Among the territories under discussion is “the regional state of Wolkait”, and a few other zones in Oromia and Amhara. Stakeholders across the country have largely deciphered Abiy’s moves. The only result he will achieve by pulling these levers is civilian casualties. International partners must immediately exert pressure to protect the civilian population. The Cycle of Violence in Horro Guduru and East Wollega Zones of Oromia (OLF-OLA Press Release) As we have repeatedly warned, the bloodshed in Horro Guduru and East Wollega, unthinkable before Abiy came in 2018, is a deliberate weaponization of Oromo and Amhara civilians against each other. The latest violence unfolded on March 4, when the so-called "Fano in Wollega"—a militia cultivated and sustained by Abiy—descended on four kebeles in Abe Dongoro District. They torched 180 homes, murdered three civilians (among them a three-month-old infant), and looted hundreds of livestock. Two days later, ENDF officers, mobilizing Oromia special forces and proxy "Shene" fighters under ‘Jal’ Mosisa, swept into Arusee Kebele—an Amhara community—and burned 200 houses to the ground. The regime that is waging a furious war on Fano in Amhara never really fights this "Fano in Wollega." Why? Because they are not enemies; they are instruments—allowed to kill Oromos so the regime can pose as avengers, dispatching its units to burn Amhara homes in "retaliation." Both so-called "Fano in Wollega" and its Shene, now led by Mosisa, are merely OPDO appendages. Every burned Oromo or Amhara home, every child's corpse, every stolen dream, every stolen herd, serves one purpose: to lock the Oromo and Amhara, as people and political community, into a cycle of retaliation that neither can escape. 
The solution is straightforward: all people of the country must cooperate to dismantle this abomination of a regime. In the meantime, Amhara forces must publicly recognize these machinations, condemn them unequivocally, and distance themselves entirely from the regime's mechanisms of murder. የአምነስቲ ሪፖርት፡ የምርመራ ውድቀት፣ የትርክት መሳሪያነት እና የአድልዎ ነጸብራቅ (የኦነግ-ኦነሠ መግለጫ)   በጾታ ላይ የተመሰረተ ጥቃት በማንኛውም ማህበረሰብ ውስጥ ካሉት እጅግ አስከፊ ወንጀሎች አንዱ ነው። በኦሮሚያ እና ከዚያም ባሻገር በመላ ሃገሪቱ በሴቶች እና ልጃገረዶች ላይ የሚደርስ ማንኛውም የወሲብ ጥቃት በግልጽ መወገዝ ያለበት፣ በተናጥል እራሱን ችሎ መመርመር እና ክስ መመስረት ያለበት ከባድ የኢፍትሃዊነት መገለጫ ነው። የትም ቢከሰት እና የፈጸመው ማንኛውም ሰው ቢሆን ተቀባይነት ሊኖረው አይችልም። በሲቪሎች፣ በተለይም በሴቶች ላይ የሚፈጸሙ ወንጀሎችን መካድ፣ ምክንያታዊ አድርጎ መሞገት ወይም ማሳነስም ተቀባይነት የለውም። በኦሮሚያ ውስጥ የተከሰቱት እነዚህ በደሎች ለረጅም ጊዜያት ተደብቀው የቆዩ ሲሆን፣ የችግሩ ተጠቂዎች ያሳለፉትን ስቃይ ለመመዝገብ እና ችግራቸውን ለዓለም አቀፍ ትኩረት ለማቅረብ የሚደረገውን ማንኛውንም እውነተኛ ጥረት በደስታ እንቀበላለን።   ሆኖም፣ የአምነስቲ ኢንተርናሽናል «ማንም ሊያድነኝ አልመጣም» በሚል ርዕስ ያወጣው ሪፖርት፣ ለረጅም ጊዜ ትኩረት ለተነፈጉት ከባድ ጥቃቶች ትኩረት  የሳበ ቢሆንም፣ በጥልቀት ሲመረመር  ከፍተኛ ጉለቶች ያሉትና ለተጎጂዎች ፍትሕን ከመፈለግ ይልቅ ሌላ ኣላማ ለመሳካት የኯተነ ሆኖ ተገኝቷል። ሪፖርቱ የጥናት ዘዴ ድክመት፣ መሠረታዊ የእውነታ ስተቶች እና በአንዲት የተወሰነች ትኩረት ውስብስብ የሆነውን ጦርነት በአደገኛ ሁኔታ ኣቅልሎ ያቀርባል።  ከሁሉም በላይ ደግሞ፣ የታጠቁ ተዋናዮች የኦሮሞ ነፃነት ሰራዊትን ተመስለው የሚፈበረኩበት፤ በሚገባ የተዘገበ ክስተት ሆኖ እያለ ይህንን ዞር ብሎ ያላየ ሲሆን ፡ ይህ እውነታ በዋሽንግተን ፖስት፣ ሮይተርስ እና በኢትዮጵያ የሰብአዊ መብቶች ኮሚሽን ጭምር በተናጥል የተረጋገጠ ነው። ይህ መሠረታዊ ጉዳይ ነው። ወንጀለኞችን በአስተማማኝ ሁኔታ መለየት በማይቻልበት ጊዜ ተጠያቂነት ማስፈን በፍጹም የማይቻል ስለሚሆን። ይህ ክፍተት በሪፖርቱ ላይ መኖሩ ግን ጉዳት የደረስባቸውን  የዕህቶቻችንን ስቃይ አያሳንስም። የሪፖርቱ ዋና ዋና ክፍተቶች እንደሚከተለው ቀርቧል።   1)    ዋነኛው ኃጢአት፡ ወንጀለኞቹን መለየት አለመቻል እና «የሐሰት OLA» ኃይሎችን ፈጽሞ እንደሌሉ መቁጠር   የዚህ ሪፖርት አስከፊ ውድቀት ወንጀለኞቹን በትክክል መለየት አለመቻሉ ነው። በገጽ 15 ላይ፣ አምነስቲ የሚከተለውን በግልጽ አምኖ ይቀበላል፡ ሪፖርቱ «በታተመበት ጊዜ ማንነታቸውን(የወንጀለኞቹን) ማረጋገጥ አልቻልንም።» በእንደዚህ ዓይነት ምርመራ፣ ወንጀለኛውን መለየት ካልቻልክ፣ ወንጀል መርምረህ መደምደምያ ላይ መድረስ ይቅርና፤ ክስ መጀመርም ኣትችልም። ወንጀለኛውን ሳትላይ ማንን ትከሳለህ? የጦር ወንጀሎችን ለመበየን ለሚፈልግ የሰብአዊ መብቶች ሪፖርት፣ ይህ የእምነቱ ማረጋገጫ ብቻ ሪፖርትቱን ይፋ ከማድረግ መቆጠብ የሚስችለው መሆን ነበረበት።   በተጨማሪ የኣገዛዙ ቅጥረኛ የሆኑ «ሐሰተኛ የOLA ወታደሮች» መኖራቸው የተረጋገጠ እውነታ ነው። የዋሽንግተን ፖስት ምርመራ፣ ከመንግሥት ኃይሎች ጋር ግንኙነት ባለው የቀድሞ እስረኛ የሚመራው የOLAን ስም አንግቦ ሲንቀሳቀስ የነበረው ፀረ፡አማፂ ቡድን ያለ ሲሆን ይህም በOLA ላይ የሚቀርቡ የዜጎች ጥቃትና ግድያዎችን ሲፈጽም መቆየቱን ኣረጋግጧል። የሮይተርስ ምርመራ «ኮሬ ናጌኛ» (የደህንነት ኮሚቴ) የተባለውን ሚስጥራዊ ቡድን የኦሮሚያ ከፍተኛ ባለስልጣናትን እንቅስቃሴ ይፋ አድርጓል፣ ይህም ከህግ አግባብ ውጭ ግድያዎችን እና ህገወጥ እስራቶችን ያስፈጸመ ያዘዘም ነው። በወሳኝነት ምርመራው የከረዩ አባ ጋዳ ልዑካን ጭፍጨፋ የተቀነባበረው በእነዚህ ባለስልጣናት መሆኑን አረጋግጧል፣ ከዚያም የኦሮሚያ ኮሙኒኬሽን ቢሮ ግድያዎቹን ለOLA እንዲያሳብብ መታዛዙን ኣጋልጧል።   ኣምነስቲ ሪፖርቱ ውስጥ የጥቃቱ ሰለባዎች ወንጀለኞቹ ማንነታቸውን፤ OLA መሆናቸውን በግልጽ እንደነገሯቸው ይናገራሉ [ገጽ 15]። ይህ የተላላኪ ታጣቂዎች ተግባር ደምበኛ መለያ ነው። በራሳቸው በሚቆጣጠሩት ከባቢ ውስጥ ትክክለኛ የOLA ተዋጊዎች ወንጀል ሲፈጽሙ ማንነታቸውን አስቀድመው የሚናገሩት ለምንድን ነው?  የተገለጸው ባህሪ መንግስት የላካቸውን አስነዋሪ ወኪሎች ግፍ እንዲፈጽሙ ብቻ ሳይኖን ስትፈጽሙ OLA ነን በሉ ተብሎ የተሰማሩ ለመሆናቸው ትልቅ ማሳያ ነው።   አምነስቲ ኢንተርናሽናል ይህን በሚገባ የተመዘገበ የኣገዛዙ ታጣቂዎች እውነታን ሙሉ በሙሉ ችላ በማለቱ፣ ስተት እየሠራ ብቻ ሳይሆን፤ በኣገዛዙ የሚደገፍ ገዳይ ቡድን ስምን በንቃት እያጠበ ጭምር ነው። የመንግስትን ፕሮፓጋንዳ እንደ ሰብአዊ መብቶች ጥናት አድርገው እያቀረቡትም ነው።   2)   ባሕሩን የማድረቅ የኣገዛዙ ፖሊሲ፡ በሪፖርቱ ችላ የተባለ የኣገዛዙ የፀረ ሽምቅ ዶክትሪን   ሪፖርቱ የሴቶችን መፈናቀል እና ቤቶችን ማቃጠልን ይገልፃል። ነገር ግን እነዚህን ድርጊቶች ከኢትዮጵያ አገዛዝ ግልጽ እና ይፋዊ ፖሊሲ ጋር አያገናኝም።  እስከ ቅርብ ጊዜ ድረስ የኦሮሚያ ብልጽግና ፓርቲ መሪ የነበረው ፍቃዱ ተሰማ ዓሳዎቹን ለመያዝ ባሕሩን ማድረቅ አለብን ሲል በይፋ ተናግሯል። ይህ ሲቪሉን ህዝብ (ባህሩን) ለOLA (ዓሣው) የድጋፍ መሰረት አድርጎ የሚቆጥር በይፋ የተገለጸ የኣገዛዙ የፀረ ሽምቅ ኦፍስየላዊ ዶክትሪን ነው።  በሪፖርቱ ውስጥ የተገለጹት የጅምላ መፈናቀል፣ የቤቶች ማቃጠል እና ማህበረሰቦችን ማሸበር ለOLA ድጋፍ ላደረጉ ሰዎች ለመቅጣት የተደረገ የፖሊሲው ተግባራዊት መገለጫ ነው።   የአምነስቲ ሪፖርት፣ ለዚህ መፈናቀል OLA ተጠያቂ በማድረግ፣ የአንድ ከፍተኛ የመንግስት ባለስልጣንን ኑዛዜ ወስዶ ለተጎጂዎቹ ክስ እንደማድረግ ነው። የሪፖርቱ የህግ ትንተና፣ «የታጠቀው ቡድን ተዋጊዎች የሲቪል ህዝብን ክፍል ለማፈናቀል የጾታዊ ጥቃት እየተጠቀሙ ነው ብሎ ማመን ምክንያታዊ ነው» [ገጽ 23]፣ የተረጋገጠ ተመሳሳይ ግብ ያለው የተመዘገበ የኣገዛዙ ፖሊሲ በመኖሩ ውድቅ ያደርገዋል።   3)   ተዓማኒነቱን ጥያቄ ውስጥ የሚያስገቡ መሠረታዊ የሐቅ ስሕተቶች   የሪፖርቱ ተዓማኒነት በራሱ መሰረታዊ የሃቅ ስሕተቶች ትብታብ ስር ይወድቃል። ስለ OLA ኣደረጃጀት ማንም ተራ ሰው ሊያጣራቸው የሚችላቸውን መሰረታዊ ሃቆችን ኣያውቃቸውም። ምሳሌዎች፥   ·      «OLA አምስት ዋና ዋና ዕዞች አሉት» [ገጽ 11] ፡ ሐሰት። OLA በኦሮሚያ ስምንት ዕዞች አሉት።   ·      «የምዕራቡ ዕዝ የሚመራው በጃል ገመቹ አቦዬ ነው» [ገጽ 11] ፡ ሐሰት። ገመቹ አቦዬ የምዕራቡ አዛዥ ሆኖ አያውቅም።   ·      «የማዕከላዊ ዞን ዕዝ .የሚመራው በጃል ጂሬኛ ነውዕ [ገጽ 11] ፡ ሐሰት። ማዕከላዊ ዕዝ ጃል ጂሬኛ በሚባል ሰው አልተመራም።   የምነስቲ ኢንተርናሽናል ምርመራ የዕዞቻችንን ብዛት ወይም የአዛዦችን ስም በትክክል ሪፖርት ማድረግ ካልቻለ፣ ጥልቅ ምርምር የሚያስፈልጋቸውን የጦር ወንጀል ቢያኔዎች መልጠት እንዴት ይችላል? ይህ የሚያጠኑትን ርዕሰ ጉዳይ መሠረታዊ የሆነ ግንዛቤ አለመኖሩን የሚያሳይና እና በሪፖርቱ ውስጥ ባለው እያንዳንዱ «ግኝት» ላይ ሌላ ተጨማሪ ጥርጣሬን ያስከተለ ሆኖ ተመዝግቧል።   4)   የተመረጠ ምልከታ፡ የስርዓቱን ከፍተኛ ጥፋተኝነት መደበቅ   ሪፖርቱ በOLA ላይ ብቻ ያተኮረ መሆኑ ብያንስ እጅግ በጣም አስገራሚ የሆነ የቸልተኝነት ድርጊት ነው። ከዛ ስያልፍ ደግሞ የኣገዛዙን ወንጀሎች የማጠብ ተግባር ነው። በኦሮሚያ የተከሰተው ጦርነት የአንድ ወገን ጉዳይ አይደለም፤ በርካታ ተዋናዮችን የሚያሳትፍ ጦርነት ሲሆን፣ በተደጋጋሚ  በተደረጉ ገለልተኛ ጥናቶች፤ ኣገዛዙ ለሚደርሱ በደሎች ከፍተኛውን ኃላፊነት ይወስዳል።   ·      የተባበሩት መንግስታት ምርመራ እንዳመለከተው የክልል ኃይሎች (ENDF፣ ፖሊስ እና ተባባሪ ሚሊሻዎች) በ2023 በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ከተፈጸሙት የሰብአዊ መብት ጥሰቶች 70% የሚሆኑትን ጥቃት ፈጽመዋል። ከኣመነስቲ የ10 ተጠቂዎች ናሙና ጋር ሲነጻጸር ጥናቱ 7,103 ያካተተ ሲሆን ሁሉም መንግስታዊ ያልሆኑ የታጠቁ ቡድኖች 23% ብቻ ይከሳል።      ·      ተመድ በተጨማሪም በነሐሴ እና ታህሳስ 2023 መካከል ብቻ፣ በENDF የተፈጸሙ 18 የድሮን ጥቃቶች 248 የሲቪል ሰዎችን ሞት እና 55 ጉዳቶችን በማስከተል ትምህርት ቤቶችን እና ሆስፒታሎችን አውድመዋል።   ·      በUN ICHREE የተደረጉ ሌሎች ምርመራዎች የአገዛዙ ኃይሎች በጥቃቶች ውስጥ ያላቸውን እጅግ የጎላ ሚና በተከታታይ አሳይተዋል።    አምነስቲ ኢንተርናሽናል እነዚህን አሃዞች ያውቃል። ይፋዊ ናቸው። ሆኖም የኣገዛዙን ወንጀል ኣጥቦ ሪፖርት ማዘጋጀት መርጠዋል። ይህ ሪፖርቱን  የፖለቲካ መሳሪያ እንጂ የሰብአዊ መብቶች ሪፖርት አያደርገዉም።   5)   የምርመራ ዘዴ፡ የርቀት ምርምር እና ያልተረጋገጡ ክሶች   አምነስቲ ጥናቱ የተካሄደው በመንግስት በተጣለ የመገናኛ ብዙሃን ኣፈና ባለበት መሆኑን ያምናል [ገጽ 11]። ቃለመጠይቆችን ያደረጉት ከርቀት መሆኑን ይገልጻል[ገጽ 8] ነው።   ከፍተኛ የኣገዛዙ ክት ትል፤ ማስፈራራት እና ፕሮፓጋንዳ ካለበት አካባቢ፣ ከሩቅ በተደረገ ቃለ ምልልስ ላይ የተመሰረተ ጥናት፤ እንድሁም በቦታው ተገችቶ ወንጀለኞችን፣ በቦታው ያሉ ፎሬንሲክ ማስረጃዎችን ለመመርመር ዕድል ሳይኖረው የሚደረግ ጥናት ከመጀመርያዉኑ ትርጉም ያለው መደምደሚያ ላይ ሊደርስ እንደማችት መገመት አያዳግትም።   ሪፖርቱ የተገነባው በአሸዋ መሠረት ላይ ነው።  የተጎጂዎቹ ስቃይ እውነተኛ ነው ብለን እናምናለን፣ ነገር ግን ሪፖርቱን የእህቶቻችንን ፍትሕ በመደበቅ በቁስላቸው ላይ እንጨት ሰዷል። ኃላፊነት የሚሰማው የሰብአዊ መብት ድርጅት፣ «ጥፋተኞቹን ማርጋገጥ ኣልቻልኩም» እያለ፣ እንደዚህ አይነት የወደቀ ሪፖርት ሳያወጣ ቆም ብሎ፣ ጥፋተኞቹን በማረጋገጥ ለእህቶቻችን ፍትሕን በማረጋገጥ በኩል ሚናውን ይወጣ ነበር።   በመሆኑም ከላይ በተጠቀሱት የገዘፉ ጉድለቶች የተተበተበውን ይህንን ምርመራ ተብዬ የፖለቲካ ጥራዝ በማጠፍ እና ይቅርታ በመጠየቅ፤ ኣምነስቲ ኣዲስ ምርመራ እንድያስጀም ጥሪ እናቀርባለን።   6)   ለገለልተኛ ምርመራ ጥሪ   የኦሮሞ ነጻነት ሰራዊት ቀደም ሲል በእሱ ስም የተላከኩ ሌሎች በርካታ ከባድ ወንጀሎች ላይ ገለልተኛ ምርመራ እንዲደረግ በተደጋጋሚ ጥሪ አቅርቧል። እነዚህ ጥሪዎች በአብዛኛው በአገዛዙ እና ደጋፊዎቹ ችላ ተብለዋል።   ይህ ገለልተኛ ምርመራን የመቃወም አካሄድ ዓለም አቀፍ የተጠያቂነትን የሚሸሸውን የአገዛዙን ሰፊ ታሪክ እና የፖሊሲ አቋም መሆኑን ያሳያል። በተለይም አገዛዙ በተባበሩት መንግስታት የሰብአዊ መብቶች ምክር ቤት፣ የዓለም አቀፍ የሰብአዊ መብቶች ባለሙያዎች ኮሚሽን በኢትዮጵያ ላይ የተሰጠውን ተልዕኮ እንዲያቋረጥ ያልተቋረጠ የዲፕሎማሲ ዘመቻ አካሂዷል፣ በምርመራ ስራው መካከል መንገድ ላይ አስቁሟል።   ከዚህ ዳራ አንጻር፣ ዖልዓ በምዕራብ ኦሮሚያ ውስጥ በተመዘገቡት የቅርብ ጊዜ ክሶች ላይ ብቻ ሳይሆን በሁሉም የኦሮሚያ ክልል ክፍሎች ውስጥ የተፈጸሙ ከባድ በደሎች ማስረጃዎች ባሉባቸው አጠቃላይ እና በእውነት ነጻ ምርመራ እንዲደረግ ጥሪውን በድጋሚ ያቀርባል። ተጠያቂነት ሊረጋገጥ፣ የተዛባ መረጃ መወገድ እና የተጎጂዎች ክብር እና መብቶች ሊከበሩ የሚችሉት በእንደዚህ አይነት ምርመራ ብቻ ነውናስ።   የኦነግ፡ኦነሠ ከፍተኛ ፅዝ መጋቢት 6, 2026 #Oromia #Ethiopia

Amnesty’s Report: Investigative failure, the Weaponization of Narrative and Portrait of Bias (OLF-OLA Press Release) Gender-based violence is among the most heinous crimes in any society. Any sexual violence endured by women and girls in Oromia, and beyond constitutes a grave injustice that must be unequivocally condemned, independently investigated, and prosecuted. Wherever it occurs and whoever commits it, is indefensible. There must be no denial, justification, or minimization of crimes against civilians, particularly women. For too long, these abuses in Oromia have remained hidden, and we welcome any genuine effort to document the suffering of survivors and bring their plight to global attention. However, Amnesty International's report, "No One Came to My Rescue," while drawing long-overdue attention to serious abuses, raises profound concerns upon close examination. The report suffers from methodological weakness, basic factual errors, and a singular focus dangerously oversimplifies a complex conflict. Most critically, it fails to grapple with the well-documented phenomenon of armed actors impersonating the Oromo Liberation Army—a reality independently confirmed by The Washington Post, Reuters, and Ethiopia's own Human Rights Commission. When perpetrators cannot be reliably identified, accountability becomes impossible. This gap does not diminish the suffering of survivors. On the contrary, it risks undermining their pursuit of justice by clouding attribution and allowing state-sponsored violence to be conveniently blamed on others. Survivors deserve more than global attention; they deserve reporting that meets the highest standards of accuracy and rigor. Anything less weakens the very cause it purports to serve. 1. The Cardinal Sin: failing to identify the perpetrators and ignoring "Counterfeit OLA" forces The most egregious failure of this report is its inability to properly identify the perpetrators. On page 15, Amnesty makes a devastating admission: "We could not verify their identities at the time of publication." In such an investigation, if you cannot identify the perpetrator, you do not have a case. For a human rights report seeking to assign war crimes, this admission should have halted publication. The existence of "counterfeit OLA" forces employed by the Ethiopian state is established fact. A Washington Post investigation revealed a counter-insurgent group actively posing as the OLA, led by a former prisoner with connection to government forces, which has been killing civilians—violence that is then blamed on the OLA. A Reuters investigation uncovered the operations of the Koree Nageenyaa (Security Committee), a clandestine body of senior Oromia officials that has ordered extra-judicial killings and illegal detentions. Crucially, the investigation found that the massacre of the Karrayyuu Abba Gada leaders was orchestrated by these officials, who then instructed the Oromia Communication Bureau to attribute the killings to the OLA. In the report, the survivors say that the perpetrators wanted to be identified and explicitly told victims they were OLA [p. 15]. This is a classic hallmark of a false flag operation. Why would actual OLA fighters, operating in their own strongholds, need to announce their identity as they commit crimes, and to villagers who would already know them? The behaviour described fits the precise profile of agents provocateurs sent by the state to commit atrocities and blame on the OLA. By utterly ignoring this well-documented reality, Amnesty International is not just making a mistake; they are actively laundering the reputation of a state-sponsored death squad. They are taking the government's propaganda at face value and presenting it as human rights research. 2. The State Policy of "Draining the Sea": a confession ignored by the report The report describes the expulsion of women and the burning of homes but fails to connect these actions to the explicit, publicized policy of the Ethiopian regime. Fekadu Tessema, the Oromia Prosperity Party chief until recently, publicly stated, "we have to drain the sea to catch the fishes." This is a publicly stated counter-insurgency doctrine that views the civilian population (the sea) as the support base for the OLA (the fish). The mass displacement, the burning of homes, and the terrorization of communities described in the report are a textbook implementation of a state policy designed to punish populations for alleged support of the OLA. Amnesty's report, by blaming the OLA for this displacement, has effectively taken the confession of a senior government official and turned it into an indictment of his victims. The report's legal analysis, which claims "it is reasonable to believe that the armed group's fighters are using sexual violence to expel a section of the civilian population" [p. 23], is rendered absurd by the existence of a documented state policy with the exact same goal. 3. Shoddy research and factual errors that undermine its credibility The report's credibility collapses under the weight of its own basic factual errors: errors on fundamental facts about the organization being accused. Mistakes of this magnitude suggest that the research was conducted with a stunning lack of rigor, or that it deliberately relied on flawed sources to build a narrative. Examples are legion: "The OLA has five main commands" [p. 11] – FALSE. The OLA has eight commands across Oromia. "The Western command is led by Jal Gemechu Aboye" [p. 11] – FALSE. Gemechu Aboye has never been the Western Commander. "The Central Regional Command... is reported to be led by Jal Jiregna" [p. 11] – FALSE. The central command has never been led by anyone called Jaal Jiregna. If Amnesty International cannot accurately report the number of commands or the names of commanders, why should any reader trust their conclusions about specific acts of violence? This is not a minor oversight; it demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the subject they are investigating and casts yet another doubt on every single "finding" in the report. 4. The Selective Lens: ignoring the regime’s overwhelming culpability The report's focus solely on the OLA is a staggering act of omission. The conflict in Oromia is not a one-sided affair; it is a brutal war involving multiple actors, with the state bearing the overwhelming responsibility for violence. The United Nations investigation found that state forces (ENDF, police, and affiliated militias) were responsible for 70% of all human rights violations in Ethiopia in 2023, affecting 7,103 victims. All non-state armed groups accounted for only 22.3% . The UN also documented that between August and December 2023 alone, 18 drone strikes by the ENDF resulted in 248 civilian deaths and 55 injuries, destroying schools and hospitals. Other investigations by UN ICHREE have consistently indicated the disproportionate role of regime forces in the abuses. Amnesty International is aware of these figures. They are public. Yet they chose to produce a report that effectively ignores the primary perpetrator of violence in the region. This effectively makes the report a political hit job, not human rights report. By singling out the OLA, Amnesty, wittingly or otherwise, seem to be providing cover for a state that has raped, killed and displaced far more civilians. 5. Methodology: remote research and unverified claims Amnesty admits that the research was conducted in a context of a government-imposed communications blackout and restricted access [p. 11]. They conducted interviews via "encrypted communication apps" [p. 8]. In an environment of intense state surveillance and propaganda, where "counterfeit OLA" forces are actively trying to frame the OLA, relying on remote testimony without the ability to forensically verify the scene, the perpetrators, or the chain of command is a recipe for disaster. The report is built on a foundation of sand. The victims' trauma is real, but the attribution of that trauma is based on the word of individuals in a war zone who are being terrorized by multiple regime forces, including those pretending to be the OLA. A responsible human rights organization would have paused, acknowledged the "unverified" status of the perpetrators, and investigated the role of state-sponsored imposters. Amnesty did the opposite: they rushed to print a headline that condemns the OLA and exonerates the regime. Amnesty International's "No One Came to My Rescue" is a reckless and biased document that fails the standards of investigative rigor. By ignoring the well-documented existence of "counterfeit OLA" forces and the state's own policy of "draining the sea," by getting basic facts about the OLA's command structure wrong, and by ignoring UN data showing that the state is responsible for 70% of all abuses, Amnesty has produced a report that is as flawed as it is dangerous. Wittingly or unwittingly, it provides diplomatic cover for a regime that tortures its citizens, runs secret death squads (Koree Nageenyaa), and kills civilians with drones on daily basis. It denies the OLA, a legitimate armed actor in a non-international armed conflict, as the report itself concludes, the presumption of a fair investigation. And worst of all, it weaponizes the trauma of ten women to serve a political narrative that lets the primary perpetrators of violence in Oromia—the Ethiopian regime and its proxies—off the hook. OLA request that the report be withdrawn, and its methodology be subjected to an independent audit. 6. Call for Independent Investigations The Oromo Liberation Army has repeatedly called for independent investigations into several other serious crimes previously attributed to it. These calls have largely been dismissed or ignored by the Ethiopian regime and its backers. This pattern of rejecting independent scrutiny reflects a broader policy posture by the regime, which has historically resisted international accountability mechanisms. Most notably, the regime mounted a sustained diplomatic campaign to terminate the mandate of the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia at the United Nations Human Rights Council, effectively shutting down the body in the midst of its investigative work. Against this backdrop, the OLA reiterates its call for comprehensive and genuinely independent investigations, not only into the latest allegations documented in western Oromia, but across all parts of the Oromia region where there is evidence of grave abuses committed. Ensuring justice for survivors requires a process that is independent, transparent, and capable of examining the actions of all actors involved in the conflict. The Massacre of Orthodox Christians in Arsi (OLF-OLA Press Release) The cardinal principle of Abiy Ahmed’s fragile grip on power is simple: exploit all fault lines, set the country’s peoples and opposition forces against each other, and reign over the ruins. Wrapped in the beguiling languages of love, peace and Medemer, this machinery of division has been running at full tilt over the last eight years. Just in the past week: Abiy helicoptered into Wollega, masquerading as the defender of Oromia, to announce to Oromos that "northerners are coming with knives to steal Oromo’s opportunity"—very rich coming from a man who just recently bragged of “destroying Wollega even more than Tigray.” Abiy then yanked electoral districts in Wolkait and Raya back and forth like rope in a tug-of-war, first “gifting” them to Tigray to bait the Amhara, then snatching them away to bait the Tigrayans, then scrambling through the courts to undo his own mischief when it threatened to unite rather than divide. And in these past days, his mercenaries have been moving through Arsi in Oromia, murdering innocent Orthodox Christians— to fracture any attempt at collective resolve against his rule by igniting inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflict. It is only because tolerance runs deep that the society still holds. Otherwise, the attempt was to pit Amhara against Oromo, Christian against Muslim, neighbour against neighbour.
