What makes HAL so unsettling in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is not just that he kills. It is that he does it out of fear. A machine acting from a deeply human panic may be the most disturbing idea in the whole film.

In Tenet (2020), the plot is structured around the ancient "Sator Square" palindrome. The five Latin words—SATOR, AREPO, TENET, OPERA, ROTAS—are all woven into the film as key character names, locations, or the title itself.

2001: A Space Odyssey was nominated for Best Director in 1969. Kubrick lost to Carol Reed for Oliver! A musical nobody watches anymore beat the movie that invented science fiction cinema
