A frozen woolly rhino with skin and horn intact has been found.... And it is tens of thousands of years old. Miners in Russia's Sakha Republic recently uncovered the remarkably preserved remains of a woolly rhinoceros, a find so rare it marks only the fifth time in history such a specimen has been found with soft tissue. Unlike typical fossils that leave only bones, Siberia’s permafrost acted as a natural freezer, mummifying the animal and protecting its skin, horn, and internal structures for tens of thousands of years. This level of preservation offers a vivid look at a creature that once dominated the frozen landscapes of northern Eurasia alongside mammoths and other Ice Age megafauna. The discovery serves as a biological time capsule, allowing researchers to explore the physical makeup and environmental conditions of the late Pleistocene era in unprecedented detail. By analyzing the intact tissue and potentially extracting ancient DNA, scientists hope to solve the mystery of why these giants went extinct approximately 10,000 years ago. As the roles of climate change and human pressure remain central to the debate over their disappearance, this specimen provides crucial evidence of how these majestic animals adapted to—and eventually lost their battle against—a rapidly shifting world. © MAMMOTH MUSEUM OF NORTH-EASTERN FEDERAL UNIVERSITY #archaeohistories

A rare encounter with a living fossil! 🌊 This is the Sawfish, one of the most critically endangered marine species in the world. Its unique "saw" (rostrum) is lined with sensitive pores to detect prey and teeth to defend itself. Seeing one in the wild is truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

In the #deepsea, this dead #sponge stalk serves as an elevating perch for colonial #anemones as well as a #squatlobster. We see many instances of organisms utilizing dead stalks to extend higher into the water column and filter out more tasty treats from the passing currents.

Animal of the Day: Deep-Sea Lizardfish! I respect animals that go all-in. If you’re going to be a predator, be a super predator. If you’re going to be deep-sea, be abyssal! The DSL is one of those fish that’s commits! It’s known as the deepest super-predator…
