Jim Egan fought for community acceptance through his writing. He wrote hundreds of articles and letters to media outlets. He sued the government for pension spousal benefits for same-sex couples. As a result, sexual orientation became protected grounds for discrimination.

"Queen Mother" of the Stonewall Riots, Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson was a Black trans woman who fought for LGBTQ+ rights. She was the co-founder of the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), an activist organization that provided support for LGBTQ+ youth.
