Journalism is the oxygen of democracy. In my second speech, this week at the @oscepa , I spoke in support of a resolution on the importance of free and independent journalism. First let me thank the initiator of the resolution: Merci à notre collègue sénateur @AllizardPascal pour son excellent travail et cette importante résolution. Je me réjouis de travailler avec vous à la mise en œuvre de cette résolution. Journalists do not carry weapons. They carry cameras, notebooks, and the truth. Yet around the world, many pay for that truth with their freedom or even with their lives. When journalists are silenced, imprisoned, or killed, it is not only their voices that are attacked. It is our shared freedom, our democracy, and our right to know the truth. If democracy dies in darkness, journalists are the ones who keep the light on. Let us have the courage to protect those who protect the truth. Because no one is truly free until all of us are free.

In The Hague, at the Parliamentary Support Team for Ukraine meeting during the @OSCEPA Annual Session, we spoke about the true nature of Russia’s war. 📍Russia is testing the limits of international law – through war crimes, nuclear blackmail around the Zaporizhzhia NPP, occupied Enerhodar, and the deportation and russification of Ukrainian children. As @PACE_News rapporteur on the issue, I stressed that Russia’s destruction of Ukrainian culture is not collateral damage, but a deliberate policy to erase our identity. This work must continue within the OSCE. Grateful to all speakers, including @DP_UA1972!

Today, following #TheHagueAS26, Special Representative on Fighting Organized Crime @eugenio_zoffili visited @Europol for discussions focused on strengthening international law enforcement cooperation and avenues for collaborative work between Europol and OSCE.

Took part in the General Debate on the report titled “International Law & Shared Principles: A Foundation for Security & Co-operation in the OSCE Area” at the 33rd Annual Session of @oscepa . International law & shared principles are tested daily in one of the most sensitive domains—cyberspace. It was great to join Members of Congress from the @HelsinkiComm at their @oscepa in The Hague over the past few days. We have separate and distinct roles, authorities, and governance, but share a common goal: advancing American interests and strengthening security across the OSCE region. This week at the @OSCEPA in The Hague, our President @JraissatiJorge presented concrete recommendations on a problem affecting millions of people: the use of the international financial system as a tool of persecution. Today, authoritarian regimes use anti-money laundering rules, INTERPOL channels, and counter-terrorism financing frameworks to target dissidents, journalists, and human rights defenders, even beyond their own borders. And no one is stopping them. We propose three actions: identify and penalize the governments that abuse these systems, end automatic cooperation with states that violate these agreements, and reform the international framework to incorporate human rights and financial inclusion standards.

I know firsthand what it's like to be on a battlefield where life-and-death decisions have to be made in a split second. Yesterday at the @oscepa, I introduced an amendment to ensure that human beings, not algorithms, remain fundamentally accountable for life-and-death decisions.
