We want to acknowledge the recent changes in OTC’s operations. As we navigate this transition, we’re taking a temporary pause from monitoring or engaging with comments on our platforms. We thank you for your ongoing patience and support.

UPDATE – Boil Water Advisory There was an internal electrical issue at the Pockwock treatment facility. With homelessness in the news & the subject of many funding announcements, it's a good time to run a refresher on some key terms used when discussing the housing crisis and the right to housing. We’re going to start with ‘Diversion’. #housing #housingisahumanright

With each announcement of shelters & other temporary measures, pls remember that none of this is ‘housing’. Being inside offers a level of dignity & safety to many, but we cannot normalize this as being a solution to the housing crisis. HOUSING first-for everyone-is the answer.

At last night’s Council mtg, Mayor Savage said “We can’t allow homelessness to be normalized.” It’s been normalized here for years as successive govts have skirted their responsibilities, refusing to dive in on the ONE solution – housing! Shelters are not housing. 1/2

Who exactly is asking for a "new right to live in encampments"? Ppl in encampments don't want to be evicted from them when there's nowhere to go. No long term adequate affordable housing. For that reason they've used the courts for the right to remain until appropriate housing is available to them. Courts have replied by saying that evicting ppl from encampments when there are no shelter spaces or only inappropriate spaces violates the right to life under the Charter. Most ppl I've spoken to in encampments want their right to housing realized - a right enshrined in int'l law and encoded in the National Housing Act.
