Parliament Commends Lira Regional Referral Hospital for enhanced quality health care, budget performance The Members of Parliament on the Public Accounts Commitee (PAC Central) have commended Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) for high budget performance, with absorption rate standing at 97% and provison of enhanced quality health care to the citizens. In the financial year 2024/2025, Parliament allocated shillings 18B to Lira Regional Referral Hospital which has a bed capacity of 456 and serves 10 districts in Lango sub-region with a population of 2.6 Million people. LRRH top management led by Hospital Director Dr Andrew Odur who is also the Accounting Officer, appeared before the PAC Commitee on Thursday 19th March, 2026 chaired by Hon.Gorreth Namugga to respond to queries raised in the Auditor General's report for 2024/2025 financial year. Hon Namugga says it's commendable that LRRH is meeting all its statutory obligations and ensuring budget absorption of upto 97%. "Director and your team, I want to commend Lira Regional Referral Hospital for this high budget absorption rate, meeting all statutory obligations is important，you are doing well at 97%, next time ，I want you to improve and be at 100%" says Hon.Namugga. PAC Members were also happy with the hospital leadership for the increased quality health care services to the citizenry. "In other places, there is alot of corruption, people told us there are no free services including delivery, but I want to thank you for offering free services to our people, remarked committee chair Hon Namugga. The committee also applauded the Hospital for increasing its revenue collection through the private wing service which nearly doubled in one year, from shillings 335M to 650M significantly contributing to the consolidated account. The Hospital Director Dr Andrew Odur while appearing to the committee requested Parliament to increase funds to the Hospital to construct a complex structure to address the ever increasing patient number. Dr Odur also informed Parliament about the Hospital strategic plans which include; increasing the Intensive care unit bed capacity from the current 3 to 10, procuring more five dialysis machine to increase to 10 from the current 5,increasing neonatal unit bed capacity from 30 to 60, constructing new storage capacity amongst others.
IMPOSTER ARRESTED FOR DEFRAUDING UNSUSPECTING PATIENTS AT LIRA REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL Lira Regional Referral Hospital Security team working closely with the Uganda Police Force on Thursday 26th February, 2026 , at around 1000 hours, arrested a one Okello Moses from the female surgical ward for defrauding shillings 200,000 from a patient's caregiver, to expedite medical services and surgery. Impersonating as a Medical Officer working at the Hospital, Okello hoodwinked the unsuspecting caregiver and solicited for a total of shillings 500,000 which he says would facilitate a "quick medical procedure". The suspect reportedly insisted that he is given a deposit of shillings 200,000 before working on the patient and remaining balance paid later. The caregiver reported the matter to our security team who alerted the Police leading to his arrest immediately, after receiving the money. The case has been registered at Lira City Central Police Station under reference 32/26/02/2026 , with the case of theft of cash and impersonation preferred against him. We shall collaborate with the Police and render all necessary support to ensure that justice is served. The Management would like to inform the public that within the month of February , 2026, we have arrested more than 5 people under similar circumstances. Our security is on 24 hour alert aided by CCTV surveillance to ensure safety of our dear patients, hospital assets and visitors. Our Satellite Laboratory which was commissioned in March 2025, by the Minister of Health @JaneRuth_Aceng, now conducts all major tests and processes results in real time, enhancing our diagnostic capabilities. Construction of New Gyneacology Ward at LRRH nears completion The new magnificent and state of the art Gyneacology/Obstetric fistula ward being constructed at Lira Regional Refferal Hospital has reached 90 percent completion, awaiting official handover at the end of this month. The ground breaking ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Heath, @JaneRuth_Aceng in November 2025. The ward is being expanded from 10 bed capacity to 45 bed capacity with a conference room, offices for nursing staff and doctors fully equipped with beds and other accessories at a cost of shillings 600 Million. State of the art equipment for management of the urogynecology/ fistula patients will be also be installed in the ward.This will include operation tables, anesthesia machines and other equipment. Its also worth noting that,one Gynecologist from Lira Regional Refferal Hospital is being supported to undertake a fellowship program in Urogynecology and female pelvic floor reconstructive surgery.
