Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day, a reminder that mums and mums-to-be deserve support for their mental health. We support women, children & families affected by drug/alcohol problems, recognising that maternal mental health is a vital part of recovery and wellbeing.

New research has highlighted women’s perspectives on effective substance use treatment and support. As a specialist women’s drug and alcohol charity, we welcome and support the @CJInnovation report “to be listened to and actually heard.”

Yet within each family is the potential for a different story, a transformative story based on honesty, mutual understanding & courage. When families are willing, professionals can help them to overcome the obstacles to this transformative process, hidden in the shadows of shame.

We know what a challenge this can be, as parents can deny or minimise the impact, or can be overwhelmed by guilt. Young children can be left with traumatic experiences that have offered given no narrative for, and for which they often blame themselves for.
