The Free State Firebirds enter the 2025 football season determined to take the next step in the postseason after finishing 6-4 last year, including a 5-2 mark in a tough Sunflower League. Despite losing a talented senior class that featured nine college football signees, head coach Kevin Stewart believes the Firebirds return enough skill and leadership to contend with the state’s best. Clemson commit Braden Wilmes, a three-year starter at left tackle and one of the top prospects in Kansas, anchors a strong offensive line. Junior quarterback Finn Moore, the only returning rusher from 2024, steps into the starting role after seeing time at safety last season. Maddon Brittingham returns as the team’s top receiving threat and will also see time at running back, while Shawn Overstreet, now healthy after a leg injury, is expected to be a difference-maker at wide receiver.  Defensively, the Firebirds will need to replace several starters but return three key leaders in strong safety Ethan Prescott, defensive end Garrison Oatis, and Moore. The defense also gains a major boost from the return of linebacker Draven Samuel, who missed last season with an ACL injury but has Division I measurables. Depth will be a concern, especially with a smaller junior class, meaning some players may see action on both sides of the ball. With a schedule that includes showdowns against Gardner Edgerton, Manhattan, and crosstown rival Lawrence High, the Firebirds will have plenty of chances to prove they belong in the championship conversation. #sportsinkansas
