Sometimes there is too much wind for our outdated grid to handle, especially in Scotland and the East of England. Rather than paying wind farms to switch off we’re trialling a new system where people who live near these constrained areas get cheaper - or even free - electricity.

@fukustar_ I don't think it's entirely fair to say that you'll never be doing multiple things on a laptop at once, especially when laptops lend themselves much more to multitasking than a phone does. 8GB RAM is fine for most but not having 16GB or even 12GB as an option holds it back IMO.

@OblivionCreator The misconception here being that you are doing multiple things on a laptop. In reality you are only doing one thing at a time. The rest of the tabs and apps go into hibernation mode when not focused, just like iOS would. Unless of course you use apps that aren’t native to macOS.

Everyone complaining about 8gb of ram is just living in a Windows world. This computer is basically an iPhone; macOS and iOS interchange code written in Swift (a compiled language). It will flood YouTube with videos outperforming comparable laptops.

@fukustar_ ...any multitasking. Made worse when factoring in that the latency of NVMe is often >1000x larger than that of RAM. If you're running multiple apps (i.e MS Word / Mail / Chrome), your biggest slowdown will just be waiting for data to go between swap & memory.

@fukustar_ (Though, considering this is the same chip as the iPhone 16 Pro, I'm pretty sure the lack of RAM upgrade options is more due to the fact that there is no A18 Chip with 16GB of RAM & I doubt they want to make a new Mac SKU on an old chip. We might see options come a A20 Mac)

@fukustar_ I agree that 8GB on a Mac is better than on a comparable Windows device, but I do think it sorely lacks a 16GB Option. Having done IT Support for both Mac & Windows environments, 8GB really doesn't get you that far nowadays, especially when working across multiple apps/windows.
