When the Oskil Dam was damaged, so was the surrounding ecosystem. This destruction could be classified as “Ecocide,” which the Criminal Code of Ukraine defines as “mass destruction of flora and fauna, poisoning of air or water resources, and other actions that may cause an environmental disaster.” Read the findings from CURIA Lab @UVA: hub.conflictobservatory.org/portal/sharing…

Our latest report discusses the potential long-term effects of the Oskil Dam flood. After reviewing the data, consortium partner Fiona Greenland of CURIA Lab @UVA expressed concern for the area’s aquatic life, birds, and animals. Because of the flood, fauna living near the dam will suffer.

The 2022 destruction of Ukraine’s Oskil Dam significantly damaged the local environment, impacting water sources, plants, and soil in the region. Under the @ICC #RomeStatute, the actions that led to the environmental destruction could be considered war crimes. Our new report by consortium partner CURIA Lab @UVA investigates the 2022 destruction of the Oskil Dam, which helped supply drinking water to residents in one of the nation’s driest regions. Remote sensing analysis shows the dam’s destruction may harm forests downstream, including Holy Mountains National Park, a protected ecological and recreational resource for the region. Our latest report by consortium partner, @GeorgeMasonU, shares satellite imagery from before and after the destruction of the Dar Mariam mission and the Hamad Al-Nil neighborhood in Khartoum, Sudan. Events like these illustrate the toll of the ongoing conflict on civilians and could signal potential violations of International Humanitarian Law. #NewReport: Since our May 2024 report on the impact of SAF-led bombings in Omdurman, Sudan, the situation has worsened. Satellite imagery from July 11 and August 4, 2024, confirmed damage to the Dar Mariam mission and the Hamad Al-Nil neighborhood in Khartoum. The Conflict Observatory’s mission is to “use open-source information to produce high-quality documentation on potential human rights violations and international crimes to increase public awareness and enable accountability.” The Conflict Observatory was founded in 2022 to document, verify, and report open-source evidence of war crimes in Ukraine. In 2023, our efforts expanded to include the civil war in Sudan. Though our active research will conclude at the end of this month, our mission to pursue accountability for alleged war crimes remains unchanged.

We reported the fall of Wad Medani, Sudan, to the Rapid Support Forces on this day last year. Wad Medani stood as a critical humanitarian hub, and its fall caused an estimated 250,000–300,000 refugees to flee. Since then, the conflict continues to damage cities where displaced civilians seek safety. Read our report from December 2023: hub.conflictobservatory.org/portal/apps/si…

We are officially moving into an archive phase where we will no longer be conducting new research and will be preserving our data sets. This change will take effect on December 31, 2024. Though our shift from active research to data preservation is a big change, our archive will enable accountability and justice for many months and years to come. Consortium partner Daniel Rothbart of @GMUCarterSchool recently hosted an event that explored the state of Sudan amid the country’s raging war. Rothbart stressed the danger of escalating violence for Sudanese civilians, noting that “militants, in some cases, strategically target civilians.”

314 children taken from Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk regions were subjected to pro-Russia "re-education." They were listed in child placement databases or assigned new Russian guardians in an attempt to systematically “Russify” Ukraine’s children. Under the direction of President Vladimir Putin, groups of children were taken from Ukraine and brought to Russia for placement. These children have been taken to at least 21 regions throughout Russia. The majority, if not all, are believed to have been made Russian citizens. Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

Another solid piece of evidence of Russia’s war crimes against Ukraine and Ukrainians is the Yale HRL study. Yale researchers have identified hundreds of Ukrainian children from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions who have been abducted by Russia since February 2022, as well as their locations and the deportation routes used. 148 children are already listed in Russian child placement databases, 42 of whom have already been adopted, placed under guardianship, or assigned Russian custodians. Another 166 children have been placed with Russian families. The report demonstrates to the entire world the extent of Russia’s actions to erase Ukrainian identity and how systematic its policy is in this regard. Ukraine is tirelessly working to ensure our children return home and that all those responsible for these heinous crimes are punished. This is a challenging task, but we are doing everything in our power. We are deeply grateful to everyone who is helping us— every countries, organization, leader, both political and public. Only together can we restore the justice Russia has violated on such a massive scale, protect the future of Ukrainian children, and bring them back home. @BringKidsBackUA #BringKidsBack
