🚨 Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call struck a surprisingly cautious tone from Elon, but it was still absolutely packed with massive updates across their entire product portfolio 🔥 Here is everything you need to know about the future of Tesla: 1⃣ OPTIMUS THE ROBOT 🤖 Tesla is increasing internal production of Optimus for testing, with the goal of it being useful outside of Tesla sometime next year, and Elon believes it will be the biggest product ever. "And then probably being able to have Optimus be useful outside of Tesla sometime next year. As you've heard me say a few times, I think Optimus will be our biggest product, not just Tesla's biggest product ever, but probably the biggest product ever." 🏭 The start of Optimus production at the Fremont factory is targeted for late July or August of this year, while a second factory being built at Giga Texas will likely start production around the summer of next year. "The start of production is, we're assuming, is somewhere around the late July, August time frame... And we're constructing a second Optimus factory at our Giga Texas location. And that will probably start production around summer next year." ✨ The V3 Optimus design is almost ready, with plans to demonstrate and show it off by the middle of this year once aesthetic elements are finalized. "The V3 Optimus design is almost ready to demonstrate... And I think probably middle of this year, we should be able to show it off." 👀 Tesla is hesitant to reveal the Optimus V3 design too early because competitors analyze their unveiling videos frame-by-frame to copy the technology, so the reveal will likely be pushed closer to actual production. "We're also a little hesitant to show V3 off because we find out competitors do a frame by frame analysis whenever we release something and copy everything they possibly can. So I think there's some value to not showing new technology until it's close to production." 🧠 Optimus will possess enough local intelligence to operate safely without a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, but will use xAI's Grok as a "manager" for higher-level orchestration and low-latency voice interactions. "Optimus can't just get stuck. It needs to have enough local intelligence that it can solve the useful things, even if it loses connection... you need kind of an orchestration AI, which, you know, Grok would be good for orchestration. And then for, you know, for Optimus's voice, you know, having a low latency, intelligent voice AI, Grok is actually very good for that." ⚙️ The initial production of Optimus will be quite slow, as the completely new supply chain and production line must iron out over 10,000 unique items needed for the robot. "When you have a brand new product and an entirely new production line, and you have 10,000 unique items, all of which have to go right into brand production, it'll move as fast as the least lucky, slowest, dumbest part in the entire 10,000... As we iron out the 10,000 plus unique items that have to be sold for Optimus to reach fine production." 2⃣ VEHICLES (CYBERCAB, SEMI, ROADSTER, S/X, MODEL Y) 🚕 Tesla has started production of the Cybercab and will begin Semi truck production soon, with initial production being very slow before exponential ramp-up late this year and into next year. "We have just started production of Cybercab and will begin production of our Semi truck soon... So you should expect that initial production of Cybercab and Semi will be very slow, but then ramping up and going kind of exponential towards the end of the year and suddenly next year." 🛑 Production of the Model S and X will end in early May, and their final assembly line will be dismantled next month to make room for Optimus production. "The last S/X production will be in early May... So the final assembly line will, that'll be dismantled next month after the last of the S/X vehicles are done." 🏎️ The upcoming new Tesla Roadster will eventually be Tesla's only manually driven vehicle, and a debut is planned in about a month. "In fact, long-term, the only manually driven car will be the new Tesla Roadster. Speaking of which, we may be able to debut that in a month or so." 👥 The Cybercab is designed as a compact, two-person vehicle, which Tesla expects will eventually account for the vast majority of its long-term production. "Well, I mean, Cybercab is the compact vehicle. It's actually, I mean, it's very roomy, but it's a two-person vehicle. And we do think probably most of our production long-term will be Cybercab because 90% of miles driven are with two or one or two people." 📈 Giga Berlin achieved a record output of over 61,000 units in Q1. "This volume increases evidence by the Giga Berlin reaching a record output of over 61,000 units in Q1." 3⃣ FSD & ROBOTAXI 🧠 FSD version 14.3 (the last piece of the puzzle for unsupervised FSD) introduced a major architectural update, while version 15 is expected by late this year or early next year to run on the AI4 hardware. "For full self driving and Robotaxi, version 14.3 was a major architectural update... And then there's a version 15. Hopefully later this will be, I hope it'll be by the end of this year, but it's certainly by early next year... And we'll run on AI4 for that, and at that point we're really just increasing the safety level of FSD above human safety level even more." 🌍 FSD has reached nearly 1.3 million paid customers globally, secured approval in the Netherlands (targeting EU-wide approval in Q2), and gained initial approvals in China (targeting broader approval by Q3). "On the FSD adoption front, we continue to see improvement, reaching nearly 1.3 million paid customers globally... We recently received approval for FSD in Netherlands. This sets up as well for an EU-wide approval later in Q2... Additionally, we've also received approvals in China. The broader approval is still not there... and we're hoping that we can get approval by Q3." 📉 Upfront purchases of FSD only increased by 7% in Q1, as the bulk of the growth came from subscriptions and Tesla actively removed the outright purchase option in certain markets. "The bulk of the growth came from subscriptions, while upfront purchases only increase 7% as we remove the purchase option in some markets in Q1." ⚠️ Unsupervised FSD and Robotaxis are operating in three cities currently, and Tesla hopes to expand this to a dozen states by the end of this year, with a rollout to customer cars likely in the fourth quarter. "Well, we certainly hope to have unsupervised FSD or slash Robotaxi operating, you know, I don't know. It does more so states by the end of this year... I'm just guessing here, but probably in the fourth quarter." 💻 Hardware 3 vehicles do not have the capability for unsupervised FSD because they only have one-eighth of the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4. "Unfortunately, Hardware 3, I wish it were otherwise, but Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD. You know, we did think at one point it would have that, but relative to Hardware 4 it has only one eighth of the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4." 🛠️ Tesla will offer Hardware 4 upgrades to Hardware 3 FSD owners by replacing the computer and cameras, which will require setting up micro-factories in major cities for efficiency. "And we'll also be offering the ability to upgrade the car to replace the computer and you also need to replace the cameras, unfortunately, to go to Hardware 4. So, to do this efficiently, we're going to have to set up like kind of micro factories or small factories in major metropolitan areas in order to do it efficiently." ⏳ Hardware 3 users will receive a distilled V14 version of FSD, expected to arrive by the end of June. "And for what it's worth, in the meantime, we're going to also release a V14 version for Hardware 3. This will be a distilled version on the same V14 software that we release for Hardware 4... And that's expected to come end of June." 📷 Tesla rolled out new camera hardware a few months ago and introduced stricter software measures that will disable FSD if the interior of the windshield has residue buildup obstructing the camera's view. "First, I want to say we did a change in cameras some months ago and those are out... And we have also implemented stricter measures for the visibility of the camera. So in recent software rollouts, if the camera is not able to see things clearly because of residue, build up or what have you, then the FSD won't be available for those cars." 🚗 The Tesla customer vehicle fleet is rapidly approaching 10 billion miles driven on FSD. "...monitoring the metrics across the entire Tesla customer vehicle fleet, which are, you know, is close to driving 10 billion miles on FSD in the next few weeks." 4⃣ ENERGY STORAGE & SOLAR 🔋 Megapack 3 production will begin later this year at a new factory located outside of Houston. "Demand for our Megapack is very strong. And we're excited to begin production of Megapack 3 later this year in our new world class factory outside Houston." 📉 Energy storage deployed 68.8 gigawatt hours in Q1 (a 38% sequential decline), yet achieved a record gross margin of over 39.5%. "In Q1, we deployed 68.8 gigawatt hour of energy storage, a 38% sequential decline... We set yet another record with gross margins in this business over 39.5% due to some one-time benefits from certain tariff recognitions..." ☀️ Tesla launched a lease product this year to capture tax credits and released a new solar panel with a best-in-class mounting system. "Tesla introduced a lease product this year that allows us to capture the tax credit ourselves and offer competitive pricing for homeowners. We've also debuted our own solar panel with superior performance and aesthetics, as well as our own best in class mounting system..." 5⃣ AI CHIPS & HARDWARE 💻 The AI5 chip taped out early, is targeted for both Optimus and data centers, and the team has already begun designing AI6 and discussing Dojo 3. "The congratulations to again to the Tesla AI chip team for taping out AI5... And we're already have a lot of momentum for designing AI6. And we've begun to discuss ideas for Dojo 3... Yeah, I do expect that AI5 will go into Optimus and into the data center." 📈 An "AI4 Plus" upgrade is planned for next year, increasing RAM to 64 gigabytes per SOC and improving compute by 10%. "We are planning an AI4 upgrade to use a newer generation RAM. So it'll go from 16 gigabytes to, I think, 32 gigabytes per SOC, so a total of 64 gigabytes, and probably a 10% increase in compute... AI4 Plus probably goes into production in the next year, I think, depends." 🏗️ Tesla finalized plans for a $3 billion research chip fab (capable of a few thousand wafers per month) on the Giga Texas campus, which starts construction this year using Intel's 14A process. "We've also finalized plans for the chip fab, the research chip fab on the Giga Texas campus... This is something we expect to be probably, you know, a $3 billion-ish initiative and capable of maybe a few thousand wafers per month... So we plan to use Intel's 14A process..." 🚀 While Tesla is handling the initial $3 billion research lab for Terafab, SpaceX will take charge of building the initial phase of the fully scaled-up Terafab. "And then SpaceX is going to take care of like the initial phase of the scaled up Terafab, and that's what we've figured out thus far... Tesla is doing the research lab, SpaceX is doing the initial part of the large-scale Terafab..." 6⃣ BATTERIES 🔋 Battery pack capacity—not cell supply—is the biggest limiter to Tesla's growth, and the company is actively expanding this capacity across multiple factories. "Our biggest limiter continues to be our battery pack capacity, and we're actively working on resolving that... So, at the moment, I think the limiter is not the cells itself. It's the battery pack capacity." 🏭 Tesla launched a Model Y battery pack with in-house 4680 cells in Berlin a few months ago, is retooling the Reno facility for more efficient lines, and is ramping up in-house LFP module production in China. "As you guys may have seen in Berlin, we started launching a Model Y battery pack with our in-house 4680 cells a few months ago... As well, we're adding additional capacity in our Reno facility, sort of retooling it... And then we continue to have growth in China as well, ramping in-house LFP module production and battery packs associated with that." 7⃣ FINANCIALS & MANUFACTURING 💰 Tesla expects capital expenditures (CAPEX) to exceed $25 billion for 2025 and 2026, driven by massive investments in AI, compute, and manufacturing. "So based on that, our current expectation for 2025, 2026 is over 25 billion of CAPEX." 🏭 Tesla is currently paying for six new factories that have already started or will be going into operation later this year. "Just to remind you, we are paying for six factories, which we're going to go into operation. Some have already started, some would go into operation later part of this year." 📋 Tesla ended the quarter with its highest Q1 order backlog in over two years. "On the order backlog front, we ended the quarter with the highest Q1 order backlog in over two years." 📈 Automotive margins (excluding credits) saw a sequential improvement from 17.9% to 19.2%, partly due to one-time benefits like $230 million from warranty drawdowns and tariff relief. "Auto margins, excluding credits, improved sequentially from 17.9 to 19.2%. Note that we've had certain one-time benefits from warranty two-downs, around 230 million, and some relief on tariffs." 🌍 Tesla saw a massive resurgence in demand globally, including over 150% quarter-over-quarter delivery growth in France and Germany (EMEA), along with positive growth in APAC (South Korea and Japan) and the US. "On the auto business, we have seen a resurgence in demand in EMEA and certain countries like France and Germany showing over 150% quarter of a quarter growth in deliveries. In APAC, we've witnessed growth in South Korea and Japan again in terms of deliveries. Even out here in the US, we've seen a slight growth in terms of quarter quarter deliveries." 💵 The company ended the quarter with just over $1.4 billion in free cash flow, but anticipates experiencing negative free cash flow for the rest of the year due to massive strategic capital investments. "On free cash flow, we ended the quarter with just over 1.4 billion... While this may seem a lot, and we will have the impact of negative free cash flow for the rest of the year, we believe this is the right strategy to position the company for the next era." 🛠️ The "Services and Other" business segment saw margins improve sequentially from 8.8% to 9.2%, supported by investments in infrastructure, supercharging, used cars, and future Robotaxi support. "The service and others improve sequentially from 8.8% to 9.2%. This includes a collection of efforts meant to support our customers like service centers, use cars, paid supercharging, part sales, insurance, and even our Robotaxi business..." ₿ Net income was impacted by unfavorable foreign exchange rates (from large inter-company borrowings) and mark-to-market charges on Bitcoin holdings, which appreciated 22% compared to the previous quarter. "Net Income was impacted from market charges on Bitcoin holdings, which appreciated 22% as compared to the last quarter, and the unfavorable impact of FX primarily from our large inter-company borrowings."

Sijui kwanini niko na damu ya kupendwa na watoto hivi? Last Sunday, I bonded with a four-year-old baby, Talisha, when they came all the way from Nakuru to my office with her shosh and aunties seeking help after her mum, Anita, was tragically stabbed to death by her KDF husband Captain Edwin as the baby watched. Jana we talked, and I promised to call her this morning but I forgot because of my busy schedule. Watoi wa siku hizi usijaribu kuwadanganya she just asked her aunt Faith to call me and said, “Uncle Sonko, why didn’t you call me in the morning as you promised?” That moment broke me. I felt so guilty. I’m sorry, baby. From today, I will call you every single day. You are not alone. I will support you. May your lovely mum rest in peace.
