In retrospect, I think the administration's choice to fragment the Department of Education and to almost completely "give education back to the states" (their words), instead of doing the opposite- which could have been implementing major reforms at the federal level to end political indoctrination in schools, and get back to effectively teaching children academic subjects, was a big mistake. Especially in blue states, but even in red states (in blue districts within the red states), the local Democrat politicians blindly shovel massive amounts of money into the schools, but ask no questions about how that money is spent, and require no accountability on the part of educators to produce even minimally acceptable outcomes. They do so because teachers unions are often so key to the election of Democrat politicians, so the local legislatures "turn the other way" as kids continue to lack even the most basic skills upon graduation. I don't know if it would have been possible for the current administration to lead in major educational reform within this country (I know our system has always been set up to have both local and federal controls), but when I heard them announce at the very beginning of the term that they were just "giving all decisions back to the states", I didn't have a good feeling about the future of public education in this country.

Just so we are ALL CLEAR on what happened today... Educators and school administrators single-handedly CANCELLED SCHOOL for 700,000 North Carolina students... ...INCLUDING MY SON!!! To wave signs around in the street instead. The signs vary from: a) F**K ICE!!! b) Defeat Trump's Agenda c) Trump is a N*ZI d) ICE OUT!!! e) Protect trans kids f) Refuse fascism g) Stop bombing schools DO NOT TELL ME THIS WAS ABOUT KIDS. IT NEVER WAS. This was ADULTS using 700,000 children, INCLUDING MINE, as political leverage against a president they don't like. That is despicable. You know better... DO BETTER.
