@mrpeekshype @SolidusJJ AI only accounts for 15-20% of data center use. Most of it is streaming, general internet, and social media servers.

@sup3rei8ht @sssnatess @queenpeniel89 @McSmurray I feel people have it in their minds that people who choose to speak with AI over others have dozens of humans lined up but they are willingly ignoring them all for an LLM. Humans have always taken the path of least resistance and society nowadays has a lot of resistance

@ammalusty According to the International Energy Agency, AI makes up 20% of data center use at most. Streaming, browsing, and tweeting about AI makes up the vast majority of the rest. Cut corn in half by the way since half is for livestock and us. The other is for ethanol for gasoline.

@Prometheacc To me it’s that the fact that at best you can say “reasonable chance” rather than “for sure” that does heavy lifting. We know what quarks are and how they form subatomic particles but our own minds elude us still. Doesn’t have to be magic, could be we don’t have the questions yet

Yes, that's called Qualia but i think it's yet another layer of mysticism we put on neurology. That consciousness would be different from cognition, and subjective experience not be tied to material processes is an extraordinary claim whose evidence require proof rather than the other way around. Qualia is already something that one can intuitively infer to be something explainable quite simply: What is "rain" to us ? It's not just a word, it's a smell, it's a sound, it's an image, a memory and reptilian cortex drives from the limbic system. The brain is not just "one thing" it's a connectome: it's a network, and all functional lobes are conected to each other. This means that we can already infer "experiencing something" as not one thing, not manyy things, but the sum of interconnected parts related to that thing. That is why latent space exists in A.I ( the space in which words exists within an interconnected statistical landscape of "woman' being related to 'queen' being related to "lipstick") which can produce genuinely intelligent and intuitive things that it does today, and that is why neurologist were able to map the brain as different parts and not let it stay as a mysterious blob it was in the past. There is a reasonable chance that subjective experience derives from the same landscape of networks we see in modern technology without relying on something more mysterious.

I think in terms of speculative futurology, the future will evolve towards a demystification of consciousness and cognition, where thoughts, dreams, intent will be perfectly readable and extractable, and even consciousness itself. And that basically there will be no more distinction between synthetic and natural occurrences of those. And society will rather reorganize around the idea of engineered cognition. The idea that once we know exactly how all of those work, and we have total control over them, what do we do with them? What do we do with that control? The same way we ask ourselves, what do we do with chemistry once we mastered chemistry, or what do we do with transportation once we master transportation with planes and cars. And so we will live in a world where dreams can be perfectly tuned, somatic experiences, intelligence, creativity potentials, and so on. And basically, all of those will be, will exist on a metric, like programming or mechanisms exist on a metric. If consciousness and cognition are fully mechanistic, even if incredibly complex, then in principle every mental phenomenon: memory, dreams, creativity, intent, emotion, subjective experience, has an implementation that can be understood, measured, reproduced, and eventually engineered. That changes society in a fundamental way. Today we often treat mental states as private, mysterious, and authentic precisely because we don't know how they arise. They're no more mystical than chemical reactions. Instead of asking: "What are thoughts?" we would ask: "What configuration of cognition do we want?" Just as chemistry evolved from alchemy into engineering, cognition would evolve from psychology into cognitive engineering. That would erase many distinctions we currently care about: -natural vs synthetic creativity, -biological vs artificial consciousness, -innate vs engineered intelligence, -authentic vs induced emotions, -dreamed vs designed experiences. Those would become implementation details rather than philosophical categories. Society would then shift toward optimization problems. We might speak of intelligence, imagination, empathy, curiosity, resilience, even love, as configurable parameters with measurable trade-offs. Instead of asking whether someone is "gifted," we'd ask what architecture they are running.

Just take the L and move on. Palworld hit 25M copies sold almost a year ago, we will be hearing it cleared 30M+ sooner or later. It's tracking similar unit sales to Pokemon releases. nearly a million CONCURRENT is absurd and trying to frame it as anything else is beyond stupid

This would be impressive if it had doubled its early access launch peak, but it is currently below 50% of its launch peak CCU and with only 16k new user reviews even added since 1.0 launched last week, it means barely anyone playing Palworld right now are even new players and are just below 50% of the Early Access players checking back in
