What Interscope did with these three albums was truly awful. Instead of giving Madonna the creative freedom she thrives on, they locked her in rooms full of songwriters and turned the process into a committee driven class project. Rather than letting her work closely with a select group of producers per album, they made songwriting a collaborative free-for-all. It’s completely understandable why so many people are skeptical of these records. When fans call them some of her weakest work, it often makes sense, because Madonna herself wasn’t fully in control. The label’s heavy-handed approach held her back.
