@yacineMTB This is why I’m not too worried about the hype of having to stockpile 3090s and crap right now.

@OgdenJaredW @dhh Hey, dual boot is already possible. You just need to follow the manual installation. It's pretty easy. Once you finish Arch installation, you install Omarchy. After that you just need to run the limine-entry-tool

Omarchy 3.7 will ship with Intel's Flexible Return and Event Delivery (FRED) enabled by default for Panther Lake systems via the new Linux 7.0 kernel. It managed to speed up the HEY 30K-assertion test suite from 1m13s to 58s!!

How are people just now talking about the lead times on gas turbines? This has been going on for years! Same with transformers.

@esrtweet You are vastly underestimating the complexity of gas turbine design and manufacturing. Especially the size turbines GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi make. There’s a reason there’s only three of them.

There's an obvious business opportunity here. 1. Pick a time-to-manufacture figure that you want to achieve that is well under 4 years. 2. Go through the history of gas turbine designs. Find the most recent one that achieves the maximum time to manufacture you chose. 3. Revive it. 4. Profit. Yes, you will trade away some fuel efficiency. But there are obviously lots of customers who will take that trade because otherwise they get nothing. Optimizing for efficiency was the right choice when demand was lower. Now it isn't. Somebody can make fat stacks of cash by recognizing this.

You cannot buy a new gas turbine until 2030. Order books at GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi stretch to 2029. Turbine prices have nearly tripled since 2019. Every AI data center needs power and every gas plant needs a turbine. And every turbine has one part that bottlenecks the entire industry: The blade. It has to survive in gas 500°C above the melting point of the metal it's made from and spin at up to 20,000 RPM under 10,000 g of centrifugal force. Each blade is grown as a single crystal of nickel superalloy, pulled through a vacuum furnace at 3 mm per minute. A set of blades costs $600,000 and takes 90 weeks to grow. The same metallurgy powers modern jet engines. Only 3 companies on Earth can build one. China spent $42 billion trying to catch up. They bought a Russian fighter engine, took it apart, and copied every part. Their copy ran 30 hours between overhauls versus 400 for the original. Modern Western engines run 4,000. You can reverse engineer the shape of a turbine blade. You cannot reverse engineer 60 years of metallurgy.

@Gaurab Lead times have been insane for years. They also require like 40% payment before delivery. Transformer lead times are also crazy, though not as crazy as gas turbines.

@LottoLabs I’m not a programmer. I’m a mechanical engineer. I installed OpenCode Go when Kimi K2.6 came out. I had never used AI in the terminal, but I used it to reproduce some MathCAD calcs in Jupyter. Thing is insane, it freaking nailed it.

Update on Opencode Go It’s great value for $5/month, there’s really no reason not to do the first month. At $10/month it’s still good value and gets you access to all sota OS models. You can’t daily drive it without hitting limits on the big models but w/ Kimi x3 you won’t hit limits unless you’re insane. Overall highly recommend the first month, then make your own decision.

I see a lot of @FrameworkPuter and @Dell XPS laptops being given out to programmers. What about us lowly mechanical engineers? Not beefy enough for Ansys? 😉

Can anyone recommend a dead simple, easy to use notetaking app based on markdown files? Obsidian is far too complicated for me. I'm looking for Apple Notes, but with markdown storage

I had agents implementing features in parallel. Now I don’t even know how to review their work. Is this the part where I just go off vibes?
