Most people with diverticulosis have no symptoms and it is found during tests like a colonoscopy. Some people may have abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, or changes in bowel habits. Treatment isn’t usually required, but to manage symptoms, treatment may involve dietary changes (like eating more fiber) and medicine. #diverticulosis #Diverticulosis #diverticulosisawareness

Diverticulosis is when there are small pouches or pockets (called diverticula) in your colon. It is common, especially in older adults, industrialized countries, and in people who eat a low-fiber diet. The exact cause is not fully understood but thought to be related to a diet low in fiber and high in processed foods. #diverticulosis #Diverticulosis #diverticulosisawareness

Colonoscopies can actually prevent colorectal cancer by finding and removing polyps that can turn into cancer. Stool and blood tests are more limited. Stool tests don’t do a good job of finding precancerous polyps. Blood tests miss many early cancers and aren’t effective at detecting polyps at all. They also don’t prevent cancer and only suggest something might be wrong. If the test comes back as abnormal, you will still need a colonoscopy to find out what is going on. While any screening is better than none, a colonoscopy is still the most complete and effective way to detect and prevent colon cancer. #coloncancerawareness #coloncancerprevention #colorectalcancer #colorectalcancerawareness #colorectalcancerscreening

Though some people may not have symptoms, make sure you know the signs of colorectal cancer. They include rectal bleeding, partial or complete blockage of the intestine, change in bowel habit, abdominal pain, slow blood loss detected by labs as anemia is seen, weakness or fatigue, and weight loss. If you are experiencing signs, talk to your healthcare provider. #coloncancer #colorectalcancer #coloncancerawareness #colorectalcancerawareness #cancerawareness
