Colonoscopies can actually prevent colorectal cancer by finding and removing polyps that can turn into cancer. Stool and blood tests are more limited. Stool tests don’t do a good job of finding precancerous polyps. Blood tests miss many early cancers and aren’t effective at detecting polyps at all. They also don’t prevent cancer and only suggest something might be wrong. If the test comes back as abnormal, you will still need a colonoscopy to find out what is going on.
