It's been awhile... but I've FINALLY FREAKING DONE IT. I have implemented an accelerated FFT algorithm for the Sega Dreamcast in my SH4ZAM fast math/linear algebra library of gainz! What you're seeing here on the left is the C implementation of the shz_fft() algorithm, an in-place, radix2, 2-point butterfly DIF FFT, with a direct screen capture of the algorithm running in real-time over a song, visualizing the resulting FFT on an actual Dreamcast in the center of the image. What's the secret sauce here that makes it "accelerated"? The SH4 assembly code on the right for populating the SH4's back-bank of 16 floating-point registers, which represents the active 4x4 matrix, XMTRX. It turns out that with a bit of linear algebra voodoo, we can represent the complex addition of the first sample along with the complex multiplication that applies the FFT twiddle factors onto the second sample as a 4x4 matrix transform applied to the 1x4 column vector created from combining the two complex input samples per iteration of the innermost loop. Once we have XMTRX populated with our 4x4 transform values, we can perform the complex number arithmetic of the innermost loop as a single instruction, FTRV, transforming the two inputs against the XMTRX matrix! The algorithm should ideally be reworked so that the twiddle factors are held constant throughout the innermost loop, allowing you to get away with only loading XMTRX once before the innermost loop, rather than for every iteration, for biggest gainz. Before we calculate final gainz over the reference FFT implementation, I have one more trick up my sleeve... I plan to use the SH4's "OCRAM" mode, which splits its 16KB data cache into an 8KB data cache plus 8KB of dedicated scratchpad memory for the algorithm. This 8KB scratchpad can hold EXACTLY our 1024 samples for the FFT buffer (times 8 bytes for the size of a complex float). This will allow us to perform the entire algorithm with all of the samples in-cache, so there will be no pipeline stalls on cache misses or memory fetches! Tune in next time for final gainz!
