@IyelolaIge I have a younger sister, the youngest in our family. During her secondary education, she doesn’t read much for exams. Our mother would always tell her to read her books, yet she consistently scored above 80%. She went on to university and graduated with a first-class degree.

I once told my genius brother that he only topped his class because private school competition is weak. He took it personally and transferred to public school to prove me wrong. My dad begged him not to listen to me. He didn't listen to my dad. Got to public school. Class of over 200 students. First position. Got to secondary school. First position. Made senior prefect in both junior and senior levels. Now in university 300 level. 5.0 GPA. Top of his class. Still hasn't seen second position. I had a package sent from Abuja to Ibadan, paid 20k to the driver as the delivery fee, he got to Ibadan, dropped the package with someone and when the person I sent to collect the package got there, he was told he needed to pay 1000 naira to collect the package because they held it down for him. We called the Abuja driver and asked him why he didn’t settle the Ibadan driver properly as we are now being asked to pay 1000 naira. After going back and forth, we had to pay. A day after, we sent another package from Lagos to Ibadan, paid 4k and specifically told the driver to let them know we won’t be paying anything to collect it, and to settle whoever he leaves the package with at the park. The person who was going to collect got to the park and they won’t give him the parcel until he pays 500. We called the Lagos driver and asked him why he didn't settle whoever he left the package with, he said they weren’t supposed to charge us again that he settled him...…when he had nothing else to say, he then said “just pay, it’s only 500 naira.” It’s just so appalling. This has now become a strategy. They have become so dubious. Is this how it is now???

Davido and Wizkid entered the music industry for completely different reasons. My brother and his wife have been separated for about 4 months and are heading toward divorce. I’ve tried to stay out of it. Last week I helped him move things into storage. While we were loading boxes, he stepped out to take a call and his laptop was open. I wasn’t trying to look, but I noticed what seemed like a separate account with a significant amount of money in it. When he came back, he seemed to realize I had noticed something and later asked me not to mention it to anyone. He said he’s been setting money aside so it wouldn’t be split. I get along well with his wife, and I feel uncomfortable being put in this position. I didn’t ask to be involved, and now I’m unsure how to handle it.

When I finished NYSC and got a job at the age of 24, I saw no reason why I couldn't get married. Two years after the marriage, while I was four months pregnant, my husband had a terrible accident that took him. I gave birth to twins five months later. I was raised to be independent and despite the constant reassurance from my in laws about taking care of the kids, I never asked for anything, although when they do give, I collected. My parents in law and rest of the kids are all abroad and they promised to take my kids and I to stay closer to family. While taking most responsibility for the kids, I still harbor the fantasy of us leaving the country one day. Raising the twins alone has never been easy, it was really stressful and tiring but I chose to manage. My little brother moved in with me to assist when my husband died. Eight years later, when the kids are starting to be independent, my mother in law called that we have an appointment at the embassy. I was super excited because, at last! Why did I get to the embassy and I was handed visas for just the twins and nothing for me. When I got home, I asked why it was so and she said that's what they could afford for now and that subsequently, they'll work on getting me there. These are people that sends money twice a year and rarely talk to the kids and I know for a fact that once they kids are there, the only way I'm getting there was if I applied myself of which I cannot afford. If my kids should go there, it's a bye to me till they are grown enough to own a phone and call me. If I stop them from going, I might be stripping them of the opportunity to live a better life than the one I offer them now, but at the same time, I honestly want to be the one to train and take care of my kids myself.
