There's been disagreement on this issue from the start. It's a complex subject.

@ArmandoACardon1 There are several denominations of Christianity that don't interpret the Bible literally. The Church Father Origen didn't even interpret the Bible 'literally'.
There's been room for variations of interpretation since the beginning. And America was no different.

@OldeWorldOrder And yet Jefferson believed much of the Bible had been corrupted, altered, miscopied or mistranslated over the centuries & he wasn’t a biblical literalist. He DIDN’T believe the Bible was the “inerrant & perfect word of God” & he didn’t support any established church of his day.

@GrumpyPantsVet I understand the arguments against his definitions. But Jefferson considered himself a 'Christian Deist', but a follower of Jesus above all.
It doesn't make sense in modern times, but in the context of the Enlightenment, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
