@heeney_luke Unfortunately this seems to be very common advice based on others I've spoken to, one reason I'll never join the rat race :) We are hoping to start a fellowship soon that recognises those who ignore this advice, do policy work before tenure, & gives them some funding.

I’ve now asked 3 econ profs how I can use economics for good (eg policy engagement) from academia and they’ve all said basically “shut up until you get tenure and ask me again when you’re 45”. Kinda depressing if you love economics because it can help the real world
