A subset of Muslim women largely Western, largely young, largely without formal Islamic education are using social medias to build audiences around rejecting specific ahadith, usually ones touching on gender roles, obedience within marriage, or female testimony. You see some Quranists backing this up because it fits their narrative of the unimportance of the sunna The format rewards confidence and emotional delivery over scholarly rigor, so you get people with zero isnad literacy performing hadith criticism in 60 seconds Some of these women encountered Islam through culturally distorted transmission; some cultural patriarchy dressed up as deen. They were taught weak or fabricated hadiths as binding, or sahih hadiths with grotesquely bad contextual framing. Their rejection is partly a reaction to that which is real and worth acknowledging. But the methodology is borrowed wholesale from Western liberal hermeneutics, essentially Protestant sola scriptura logic applied selectively, combined with “this hadith makes me uncomfortable therefore I reject it.” That’s not Islamic epistemology. That’s not even coherent epistemology. You cannot accept the Quran through a chain of transmission and then reject mutawatir or sahih ahad hadith because they conflict with 2026 gender politics or your desires. The epistemological foundations are the same. The deeper problem is they have no usul. They’re doing fiqh without usul al-fiqh, hadith criticism without mustalah al-hadith, and tafsir without knowing Arabic. It’s a circus A significant portion of these people don’t actually want Islamic reform. They want Instagram-compatible self-determination with Islamic branding. The goal is personal autonomy with religious guilt removed. That’s a legitimate human desire. But it should be named honestly rather than dressed up as scholarly critique. The good thing is the tradition will outlast the TikTok cycle. It always does.

Enjoy your long weekend. Host your parties, your weddings even, on ashura, that's your right, and having an opinion about it is mine. If you actually lacked empathy, I'd let it go. But you don't. you know exactly what you're doing. You go all out on this one day because you want to hurt sentiments of a community you detest. Honestly, I'd respect you more if you were openly hateful. It's the hypocrisy I can't respect.
